If you’re a romantic, you’re certainly well versed with the usual romance genres, historical romance, contemporary romance, romantic suspense, historical romance, and even your Fifty Shades of…ehm…erotic romance. If you’re not someone who likes cheesy romance novels with the most cringeworthy tropes, you’re definitely someone who wouldn’t explore the genre and are in a foul mood around Valentine’s Day.

Either way, this list has got you all covered. Because for the romance-genre addicts, this is a refreshing change, and for the rest of us, this is really an opportunity to have a good laugh, or be taken by surprise, or maybe even be left impressed, or perplexed.

Here are 5 of the craziest romance subgenres (and mashups, and motifs and themes) that you should definitely explore. If you have the appetite that is…

1. Paranormal Romance

As the name suggests, paranormal romance combines all the best parts of romantic fiction and suspense while including elements from the beyond. There are different kinds of paranormal romance categories so you can choose based on what suits your palate including shapeshifters, ghosts, and pretty much any entity that’s not from this world. Believe it or not, this romance subgenre is growing rapidly. You’re going to have to check it out for yourself if you want to know why.

2. Amish Vampires

Yep, you must be familiar with the vampire tropes if you spend time on Wattpad, but what about Amish Vampires? While the Amish genre has been gaining a lot of traction over the last few years, that coupled with the vampire trope has been an interesting combination, to say the least.

While this one does not have too much romance, the relationship the protagonist shares with his wife is heartwarming, to say the least. And so…

3. Alien Abductions

The Earth Woman and Alien tropes are by no means unpopular. They have quite a following and make for some very interesting reads. This is definitely for you if you’re a fan of science fiction and enjoy the idea of it being coupled with your, wink wink, fantasies. Within this subgenre, you have options to choose from, there is the long-distance, sweet romance, and then, there’s erotica.

4. Romance meets Santa

You read that right! There’s a whole lot of stories that take you on a ‘wild’ ride with Father Christmas. Catering to all tastes, there’s an entire array of topics for you to choose from. You have vanilla options and even something like…ahem…BDSM. I could tell you more, but then I might rob you of some fun. From wanting Santa to go ‘up your chimney’ to ‘being on the naughty list’, Santa is definitely ‘coming’.

5. Interspecies Romance

Interspecies romances have been gaining popularity since the release of movies like The Shape of Water and Ted 2 and even Planet of the Apes. So, if you feel like those movies did something for you, giggle or otherwise, you might want to explore this genre a little more.
