2024 has seen some amazing adaptations from graphic novels for adults and children alike. Now that we’re approaching the end of the year, it’s time to look back and discuss what we saw in 2024. The Boys by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson
The graphic novel is set in a world where superheroes are a given and someone is needed to ensure they don’t get out of line. Enter The Boys, a team of dangerous people backed by the CIA dedicated to watching and controlling superheroes.
The first season of The Boys was released on July 26, 2019, by Amazon MGM Studios and Sony Pictures Television. On June 12, 2024, its fourth season premiered, and its fifth and final season is expected to be released in 2026. You can watch The Boys on Amazon Prime Video with a subscription or on Apple TV, YouTube, or Fandango at Home for $1.99 per episode.
Garfield At Large by Jim Davis
Garfield is a cat whose attitude is just as strong as his appetite. Living with Jon Arbuckle, his owner, and Odie the dog, Garfield is used to getting exactly what he wants — and complaining when he doesn’t.
The Garfield Movie was released by Sony Pictures on May 24, 2024. When Garfield and Odie are kidnapped, they are forced to join a heist with Garfield’s father, Vic, who abandons him. As the two butt heads, the question arises: will they ever reconcile their relationship? You can watch this movie on Netflix with a subscription, or places like Fandango, YouTube, or Amazon Prime Video for $5.99.
Heartstopper by Alice Oseman
When Charlie, an openly gay overthinker, and Nick, a cheerful and popular rugby player, meet at an all-boys school in Britain, friendship quickly blossoms into something more. But it’s not as easy as it sounds for Charlie as the only gay boy at an all-boys school or for Nick, who’s wrestling with his conflicting feelings.
Heartstopper season one came out on Netflix on April 22, 2022, to critical acclaim. Its third season premiered on October 3, 2024. It has not yet been renewed for season four, but creator Alice Oseman said in a podcast interview with Tommy DiDario that if it did, it would be the final season. You can watch all three seasons on Netflix now.
Scarlet Witch, Vol. 1: Witches’ Road by James Robinson
The Scarlet Witch is tasked with journeying around the world to fix witchcraft, which has been broken. But as Wanda solves magical crimes and begins to repair witchcraft, an important question remains: who broke it in the first place?
Agatha All Along premiered on Disney+ on September 18, 2024, and is a spin-off series of the 2021 series WandaVision. It has not yet been announced, but as Agatha was originally intended to be a mini-series, it is unlikely there will be a second season. You can watch this show on Disney+ now.
We have certainly seen some amazing graphic novel adaptations in 2024, and with adaptations such as Dav Pikey’s Dog Man and the Smurfs movie musical expected to debut next year, we can only hope 2025 is even better.
