We’re always on the lookout for amazing music to listen to, and as avid readers, we appreciate great songwriters. Creating a good song requires careful construction, and these women have mastered it. There are plenty of talented ladies who dominate the music industry at the moment, but we’ve compiled a short list of our popular favorites. These are some of our favorite modern women with an astounding knack for making music.

1. Lorde

With over 20 million monthly listeners on Spotify, Lorde has a loyal fanbase due to her songwriting skills. Lorde had her start when she was just a teenager and released her debut album, Pure Heroine. Since that album in 2013, she has released only 2 albums, both of which found plenty of success.

2. BANKS

BANKS is a songwriter of the electronic-pop genre. She drops dreamy electronic breakup hits that will either empower you or break your heart. Her 2016 album, The Altar, is especially a favorite because of its production and writing. It is definitely a no-skips album.

3. Elena Tonra

Elena Tonra is a songwriter from the indie band Daughter, and her solo project, Ex:Re. Her songwriting is painfully heartbreaking and successful at making you feel something. The sound is of an alternative indie background and features some soft electronic elements. The production pairs exceptionally well with her heart-rending writing.

4. SZA

SZA has over a whopping 68 million monthly listeners on Spotify, and deservedly so. Her recent album from 2022, SOS, is a hit, but her 2017 album, Ctrl, really shines as well. SZA writes about breakups and heartbreak in such a casually relatable way. She makes you feel so empowered sometimes or can leave you crying while singing her catchy songs.

5. Victoria Legrand

Victoria Legrand writes for the alternative indie band Beach House. Their genre also includes elements of electronic pop. Legrand’s vocals are haunting as she recites her poetic lyrics. The albums Depression Cherry, from 2015, and Bloom, from 2012, are both lyrically successful albums. They are evocative and emotional as you’re entranced in the musical production.

6. PJ Harvey

PJ Harvey is a songwriter who was most active during the 1990s and 2000s. She creates a musical style of alternative rock paired with emotionally charged lyrics. She has collaborated with Thom Yorke of Radiohead, which can tell you a lot about her sound and lyricism, as Radiohead is another successful alternative band. Despite collaborations, PJ Harvey has created her success through stellar songwriting skills.

7. FKA Twigs

Writing hauntingly beautiful lyrics, FKA Twigs creates music of the electronic-pop genre. She is a multi-talented artist who is also a magnificent dancer. Her lyrics on the hit song Cellophane are so moving and atmospheric while shattering your heart. Her 2019 album Magdalene is full of writing that moves you and breaks you.

8-10. BoygeniusJulien Baker, Lucy Dacus, Phoebe Bridgers

Boygenius is a trio of the most talented women: Julien Baker, Lucy Dacus, and Phoebe Bridgers. They have an indie rock sound and have found success writing music together. They each have their respective solo careers, forming in 2018 to create their self-titled EP. Individually, they are just as talented at writing their songs, not just for Boygenius the group.
