I love new books. You love new books. Let’s talk about new upcoming books.
May has plenty to look forward to: Mother’s Day, Memorial Day, Cinco de Mayo, and Root Canal Appreciation Day (don’t ask about my source of knowledge). It’s a month that keeps things interesting. And this May, the excitement is amplified by a batch of new books hitting the shelves. Fresh stories, gripping narratives, and page-turning adventures are on their way! It’s the kind of news that makes getting out of bed a little easier. Here are the most anticipated books to add to your reading list once May rolls around.
The Paradise Problem by Christina Lauren
May 14, 2024

Rich Billionare Professor. Struggling Artist. It’s a cliche, but add the fact that they are already exes and already pulled the fake dating scheme. This story takes place years after they got “married” and then divorced. However, to get the inheritance, they must remain married for five years. Liam is worried about Anne being corrupted by the plan, but he soon realizes that she is more grounded than he realized. All the while Anne is learning that security is not just financial stability but, perhaps, love.
The Ministry of Time by Kaliane Bradley
May 7, 2024

Time travel romance never looked this divine. Ministry of Time offers a time-travel romance with a spy thriller twist. Think of it as Outlander but with spies and time travelers. The story follows a woman assigned to work as a “bridge,” helping Commander Graham Gore (from 1847) adjust to the modern world after being transported across time. As she works with him, a suspicious government entity known as the Ministry of Time looms in the background, raising the stakes in this captivating romance.
Five Broken Blades by Mai Corland
May 7, 2024

This book is about a band of trained killers, criminals, and crooks on a mission to kill the God King Joon. If you love Six of Crows for its found family of criminals, Five Broken Blades offers a similar vibe with the added twist of Korean royalty and assassins. Each member of this group has a unique backstory and motivation, but one thing is clear: they must trust each other to take down the King. This adult fantasy romance features sharp banter, thrilling action, and complex characters.
Heavenbreaker by Sara Wolf
May 21, 2024
It’s the cover that made me compelled to read this alone. It’s giving Fourth Wing… but replacing the dragons with machines… then adding a personal vendetta to kill the House that ruined her life… then making it less spicy… and then adding space. I totally could be hitting the wrong nail, but either way, it’s about a main protagonist rider with reckless resilience and nothing to lose.

The story follows a lead character who must fight for her life, enduring trials and tribulations to take down the House that destroyed her family. Along the way, she forms unexpected friendships and finds herself falling in love with her enemy.
The Dangerous Ones by Lauren Blackwood
May 14, 2024

This is a fantasy twist on slavery in the Civil War, with the addition of vampires. In the heart of 1863 Pennsylvania, Jerusalem fearlessly leads her battalion of Saints in the Union army against Confederate forces allied with vampires. With her demigod-like reflexes and strength, she’s determined to seek revenge for her enslaved past and the murder of her family. Only, of course, she has to work with a handsome but arrogant Ancient Vampire, Alexei, to bring down the ones that shattered her life. This book is about revenge, freedom, and the undead.
Lies and Weddings by Kevin Kwan
May 21, 2024

Lies and Weddings is by the same author as Crazy Rich Asians! So, if you adored that story, check out this one in May. This book is about Rufus Leung Gresham, the Earl of Greshambury, who has an issue. His family Trust is going down, fast, and after years of living in riches, they’re now in debt. The fix? He has to marry a hotel heiress with royal background. However, he’s still in love with his childhood crush. Before he makes a decision, a volcano explodes… yes, it erupts, along with his plans and the family’s reputation. This new romantic comedy is a pure rollercoaster ride, and I’m ready to buckle in!
Goddess of the River by Vaishnavi Patel
May 21, 2024

This fantasy is one of the most highly anticipated May releases, and reasonably so. This folktale is a retelling of the story of the goddess of the river and her son. In this rendition, Ganga is cursed to be a human and marry King Shantanu. She gets wrapped up in royalty, bound to a curse, and has to leave her son to earn her freedom. When her son, Devavrata, is grown, the war only just begins. If you love fairytales, curses, legends, myths, and ancient folktales, then this is your story.
When Among Crows by Veronica Roth
May 14, 2024

Need a short story with mystical fairytales and magical realism? This is your next book. This Polish mythology–inspired story takes place in a magical version of Chicago. It has underground systems, monsters, magical flowers, and Gods. Our main protagonist, Dymitr, is a fighter with many secrets. But one thing is certain, he will do anything to get what he wants, including teaming up with his sworn enemy in his race against time.
When We Were Silent by Fiona McPhillips
May 2, 2024

Highfield Manor is a place where secrets lurk behind every ivy-covered pillar. Louise Manson, the new student, finds herself tangled up in privilege and deception at Dublin’s most exclusive private school. She is befriended by Shauna Power, through whom Lou discovers that even the elite are not safe from Highfield’s dark shadows. Fast forward 30 years and Lou’s past comes knocking when she’s asked to testify in a lawsuit against the school. Her daughter and career are on the line, but Lou must confront the ghosts she kept hidden in the past and uncover the truth.
The Dixon Rule by Elle Kennedy
May 14, 2024
Another fake-dating Hockey Romance by Elle Kennedy? Yes, please!

Diana, the main protagonist, has some rules: no parties, no hooking up with teammates, and no hitting on her. However, her rules get a little shaken up when her ex-boyfriend is persistently attempting to get her back. So, she devises a plan to date the playboy hockey hottie, Shane, who has the same problem. Diana doesn’t break her rules, but a fake relationship with the one person her ex-boyfriend hates is her best loophole. Maybe she will realize that some rules are meant to be broken.
