Even in 2024, data confirms an important trend regarding the reading habits of residents in the European Union: despite the growing digitalization of the media, the percentage of people who buy paper books, magazines, and newspapers online has remained substantially higher than that of their digital counterparts.

In particular, according to recent data, 13.4% of EU residents have purchased paper books online in the last three months, slightly up from 12.7% in 2022 but still below the 14.5% recorded in 2021. In contrast, only 7.2% of residents opted for e-books in the same period, which demonstrates a significant disparity in consumer preferences.

What The Numbers Tell Us

What emerges from analysing the data is therefore once again readers’ preference for paper books compared to their digital counterparts, even when it comes to online purchases.

The bias toward print materials over digital formats can be attributed to several factors. First, the tactile experience of holding a paper book or magazine is often cited as a vital element of enjoyment that digital formats simply cannot replicate. Readers often express a preference for the feel, smell, and visual aesthetics of printed pages, which contribute to an overall richer reading experience. Many consumers also appreciate the lack of digital distractions when interacting with printed materials, which allows for deeper concentration and immersion.

It is also worth noting that the cultural significance of printed books and magazines remains strong in many regions, particularly in countries such as the Netherlands, Luxembourg, and Ireland, where the highest percentages of online purchases of print books were reported, at 23.5%, 22.2%, and 21.1%, respectively. In contrast, countries such as Cyprus, Latvia, and Bulgaria showed much lower rates of online purchases, probably due to differences in cultural habits or economic conditions that influence the income available for such purchases.

Lastly, the preference for print materials may also be influenced by the rise of eco-consciousness among consumers. Many readers now seek sustainable publishing practices, such as recycled paper and environmentally friendly inks, which can enhance the appeal of physical books. This trend suggests that publishers could benefit from promoting their sustainable practices, tapping into a growing market of environmentally aware consumers who prioritize both the content and the ecological footprint of their reading materials.

E-Books: A Growing but Limited Market

Despite a slight increase from 6.6% in 2022, e-book purchases have not increased as rapidly as expected. The 7.2% of residents who opted for e-books in 2023, for example, remained far behind sales of printed books. The availability of a wide selection of e-books does not appear to significantly influence consumer preferences over printed editions, which suggests that, although e-books are gaining traction, they are not yet positioned as the primary choice for many readers.

Denmark and Finland are notable exceptions, where e-book purchases have overtaken those of print books, at 22.0% and 21.6% respectively, but this may indicate a regional trend where digital adoption is not just embraced but preferred, perhaps due to a combination of effective marketing strategies, digital literacy and perhaps a cultural shift towards modern methods of consumption.

The picture, however, is different from the trends typically seen for other types of online activity. Other sectors have experienced a more pronounced shift towards digital, with traditional forms of entertainment and gaming, such as blackjack and other casino games, finding fertile ground online. In fact, the rapid rise of specialized platforms offering live gaming experiences has attracted significant numbers of players looking for the typical gaming experience without the need to visit a physical venue. In essence, this shift reflects a broader trend where convenience and accessibility are taking over consumer choices, particularly among younger consumers.

The Future of Print and Digital Media

The data paints a complex picture of consumer preferences in the EU, revealing a strong loyalty to print materials while digital formats gradually carve out their niche, raising important questions about the future of media consumption and the strategies publishers could adopt to engage their audiences more effectively.

As technology continues to evolve, it will be essential for traditional media to adapt and integrate digital solutions that complement their print offerings. Strategies could include improving the interactivity of e-books or providing bundled offers that combine print and digital formats, allowing readers to choose their preferred medium while still benefiting from the advantages of both.
