You work hard on the pieces you create, and being a student can be financially stressful. Writing scholarships are a wonderful way to take the pieces you work so hard on and find resources that provide finances to help you continue in your craft and education. To work towards making money off of your work, take a look at these seven scholarships and awards that will give you opportunities for some extra funds.
Editor World First-Generation Student Scholarship
Editor World First-Generation Student Scholarship on Scholarships.com is a $1,000 scholarship for first-generation students pursuing a graduate degree.
Due by May 1, 2025, this scholarship requires an application with your submission of a 900-word essay detailing your academic success and how access to resources supports your education. Recipients will be notified in July and will have their name, photo, and essay featured in an Editor World press release with marketing communications. This scholarship funds books, supplies, and other academic expenses to help graduate students looking for aid.
Freddie L Brown Sr. Scholarship
Freddie L Brown Sr. Scholarship on Bold.org is a $1,000 scholarship for high school and undergraduate students who write stories, poems, and drawings.
Due by May 5, 2025, this scholarship is looking for work that displays wit, spirit, or humorous content that reflects creativity and heart. One winner will be selected and announced on June 5, 2025. Applications only require a Bold.org profile along with the submission and are intended to spark the creativity needed in writers.
Leroy F. Aarons and Kay Longcope Scholarship
Kay Longcope Scholarship from the Association of LGBTQ+ Journalists provides up to $3,000 for undergraduates and graduate students committed to journalism and further providing accurate representation in LGBTQ+ media.
Due by May 20, 2025, this scholarship requires an application, a one-page resume, five work samples, an official transcript, and proof of enrollment to your designated college. Recipients will be notified in mid-July and will continue to work with the association to create projects that further their mission of “fair and accurate coverage of the LGBTQ+ community.” If accepted, the work put into this scholarship will be a nice resource for aspiring journalists who need aid and resources to further their portfolio with projects in their field.
Narrative Prize
The Narrative Prize from Narrative Magazine is a $5,000 prize for new or emerging writers.
Due by June 15, 2025, this scholarship accepts short stories, novel excerpts, poems, one-act plays, graphic stories, and works of literary nonfiction. The winner (or winners) will be announced in September and will be awarded in October along with being published in Narrative Magazine. This scholarship is great for writers pursuing different mediums and, if selected, will be a great opportunity to get your work published.
RonranGlee Literary Scholarship
RonranGlee Literary Scholarship from Bold.org is a $2,000 scholarship for high school seniors and undergraduate students working on their close reading skills.
Due by June 17, 2025, this scholarship is looking for students to work on their close reading skills and provide a short essay in your analysis of a paragraph from a literary piece. The five winners will be announced on July 17, 2025. Take what you’ve learned in your classes along with your interpretations and, if selected, hopefully, the money will be able to pay for said classes.
“Pen to Paper” Scholarship for Storytellers
“Pen to Paper” Scholarship for Storytellers from Scholarships 360 is a $1,000 scholarship for storytellers who are high school upperclassmen, undergraduates, or graduate students.
Due by June 30, 2025, this scholarship is looking for a 250-word short story based on the prompt. The winner will be announced on July 31, 2025. If you are a wordsmith or interested in creating short stories, this scholarship would be a great place to practice your craft.
The Writer’s Digest Annual Writing Competition
The Writer’s Digest Annual Writing Competition from the Writer’s Digest University is a $5,000 cash prize for writers looking to be published.
With the early-bird deadline on May 5, 2025, and the official deadline on June 2, 2025, this competition allows for many mediums including genre/literary short stories, memoirs, nonfiction, poetry, young adult, and comedy. The winners will be notified before or by October 17, 2025, and will receive a paid trip to the Writer’s Digest Annual Conference, publication of their piece on WritersDigest.com, and an interview to be published in an issue of Writer’s Digest. Prizes are also awarded to top winners. This competition will be helpful for writers trying to find an outlet for publication, looking for a competitive space.
