Today is National Be a Dork Day! To celebrate, I’m going to tell you why you should never be embarrassed about your love of books.

Society has a natural tendency to view bookish people as “dorks” or “geeks.” I mean, if you’ve ever tried to read a book in public or around people you know, you’ve probably heard them say something along the lines of, “I don’t even remember the last time I picked up a book” or “What do you mean you read for fun?”

But why? Why do people act like they’re cooler or better than you because they don’t enjoy reading?

It truly doesn’t make sense–especially when they aren’t considered dorky for their hobbies. It’s rare that someone would be viewed as dorky because they love playing sports or watching TV.

Whether your hobby is cooking, gardening, traveling, hiking, listening to music, or watching Netflix–it’s all just different forms of entertainment. Why aren’t they considered dorky as quickly as reading is?

Plus, all these things have benefits! Activities like hiking or surfing exercise your body, but reading exercises your mind. If anyone ever tries to convince you that their hobby has more benefits, remind them that yours has just as many.

Even if you look solely at passive entertainment – reading, watching TV, listening to music or podcasts –people usually consider one of those things much “dorkier” than the others. I mean, if you tell someone that you love to relax by binge-watching something or listening to music, they wouldn’t bat an eye. But if you tell someone you relax by reading a book? If they’re a non-bookish person, they’ll probably be at least a little surprised. They might even wonder how that helps you relax. Sometimes, they’ll start telling you all about how bored they would be and how they don’t understand how you find that entertaining. Not that I’m speaking from experience or anything.

Regardless of your hobby, don’t be afraid to dive in and be a dork about it. Some people spend all day watching Netflix. Some go to the beach or pool for hours. If you love nothing more than spending hours snuggled up with a good book, then don’t let the opinions of others stop you. That’s your passion, and it’s part of what makes you who you are. You can talk about it all you want, too, because who cares what people think?

And if they want to call you a dork, let them! What’s so bad about that, anyway?
