Modern technology means we can shoot a text, send an email, or call someone, and most likely we’ll get a response within a day or less. Mailing letters certainly isn’t as fast, but that doesn’t mean that it’s not a great option! They Build Anticipation
Waiting for a letter to come, excitedly checking the mail every day, then feeling either disappointed or elated if the letter is there or not is a unique feeling that modern technology can’t really capture. It’s about wondering what the letter says, thinking about what you’ll say in response — even if you don’t know the letter’s contents — and the novelty of it, especially for those who grew up surrounded by modern technology.
Gives You Something to Look Forward to
Everybody needs something to look forward to, and this is a wonderful, small thing to get excited about. Even if it’s just as small as looking forward to the day the letter arrives or looking forward to responding to the letter, it can make a difference in someone’s day. This is especially so for those who don’t have many friends or relatives or those who are feeling lonely.
They Have More Meaning
It takes a lot more effort to handwrite a letter and mail it than to type out and send a text message. Even if the letter isn’t long, it shows the recipient that you were thinking about them and that they were worth the time it takes to handwrite a special message. It really sets off the warm and fuzzies.
Might Make it Easier to Express Feelings
Some of us have trouble talking about feelings, so it may be easier to write them down for someone instead of speaking. Also, with the extra effort and thought put into it, it may be easier to find the right words. It takes time for the other person to receive and read the letter, which gives you time to either forget about what you wrote or to look forward to their response.
Maybe handwritten letters will come back in style, or they won’t…but they should.
