If you’re a fan of the contemporary genre or the young-adult romance genre, then John Green is definitely a household name for you. Well, Green is on his way to a fourth screen adaptation based off his novels, this time for his most recent young-adult romance, Turtles All the Way Down (2017).
The adaptation of the New York Times Bestseller was announced just yesterday, March 9. It will be released by HBO Max and star up-and-coming young actress Isabella Merced.
Turtles All the Way Down tells the story of an American high school student, Aza Holmes, who struggles with anxiety and obsessive compulsive disorder. When a billionaire in her town, Russell Pickett, goes missing, Aza and her friend Daisy set on a mission to find him. Along the way, she is reacquainted with an old friend and son of Pickett, Davis.
Green’s novel was published a few years ago in 2017, and gained positive critical and audience reception for his characterization of Aza. In addition, Green received praise for the discussion and depiction of her journey and struggle with mental health and relationships.
Isabella Merced’s previous notable movie roles included playing the titular character in Dora and the Lost City of Gold (2019), Instant Family (2018), and the lead of Nickelodeon’s children’s comedy, 100 Things to do Before High School (2014-16).
Fans of the novel may be anxious to know about the rest of the cast set to play the novel’s characters, from the eccentric Daisy to the grounded Davis Pickett. Unfortunately, there is not a lot of information released about the future movie’s cast outside of Merced as of yet.
The director was announced to be Hannah Marks (Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency). The script will be written by Elizabeth Berger and Isaac Aptaker (This is Us; Love, Simon). Fans will be excited to know that Green himself will be executive producer of the movie, also!
There is no confirmation of a release date for the movie.
The news is a wonderful surprise to many; which Green himself posted just yesterday on TikTok. He announced in a post: “In 2017, I wrote a book called Turtles All the Way Down and it was just announced like three seconds ago that it is going to be a movie and that Aza will be played by Isabella Merced.”
“The movie’s going to be directed by Hannah Marks,” Green continued. “Oh my God, I’m so excited.” Same, John Green. Same.
Green’s previous book-to-screen adaptations included The Fault in Our Stars (2014), Paper Towns (2015), and Looking for Alaska (2019). It’s safe to say that the author made a great name for himself in the YA genre during the 2010s. Now, Turtles All the Way Down will soon join this list- and yes, it’s 2022, but the novel published in 2017 so it still counts!
