The live-action series is based on the science fiction trilogy by Liu Cixin. The book explores earth encountering an alien civilization. The novel is one of the most successful Chinese science fiction novels of the last two decades. It won the Hugo Award for Best Novel and also received the Chinese Science Fiction Yinhe (“Galaxy”) Award.
“No, emptiness is not nothingness. Emptiness is a type of existence. You must use this existential emptiness to fill yourself.”Liu Cixin, The Three-Body Problem
The new show is in the hands of some familiar names. While we don’t know exactly when the show will release next year, Netflix confirmed,
“Academy Award-nominated director Derek Tsang (Better Days) will direct, among others to be announced. Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss serve as showrunners, while Alexander Woo (True Blood) co-created and wrote the series. All three are executive producers.”Netflix
Since the novel is part of a trilogy, hopefully we can expect multiple seasons for the upcoming adaptation, but Netflix hasn’t released any information yet.
Who Will Star In The Show?
Liam Cunningham told Netflix, “The people involved in making this will treat these books with the largest amount of respect that they possibly can give.” It is safe to say the series is in good hands!
In addition to Cunningham (who played Ser Davos Seaworth on Game of Thrones), the show will star Jess Hong, Jovan Adepo, John Bradley, Eiza González, Marlo Kelly, Alex Sharp, Sea Shimooka, Zine Tseng, Saamer Usmani, Benedict Wong, Jonathan Pryce, Rosalind Chao, Ben Schnetzer and Eve Ridley.
The live action series is in the post-production stage premiering on Netflix in 2023.
