As Libra season approaches its end, it feels like it may be the perfect time to acknowledge a few fictional characters who are — or could secretly be — incredibly Libra-coded. In the words of Oscar Wilde, a true, archetypal Libra, “Anyone who lives within their means suffers from a lack of imagination,” and these words ring no truer than to those born during Libra season. Libras are known for positive qualities, such as sociability, intellectuality, and creativity, as well as for negative qualities, such as indecisiveness and materialism, and not a single Libra is exactly the same as another. Now, here are a couple of popular media characters who might just be Libras in spirit.
Aang from Avatar: The Last Airbender
When it comes to exhibiting the undeniable traits of a Libra, few characters succeed in outshining 12-year-old Avatar Aang. At his core, Aang is a friendly, warm-hearted pacifist, intentionally choosing to lead with a sense of optimism and adventure. Throughout the seasons of Avatar: The Last Airbender, he also proves to be incredibly forgiving and compassionate towards those he comes across — unless they truly hurt his friends. As the Avatar, Aang seeks to right an immense injustice towards both his people, the Airbenders, and the world, but struggles to accept the weight of the responsibilities required of him.
He displays the infamous indecisiveness of a Libra by repeatedly trying to escape the identity that scares him — that of the Avatar — yet his strong moral compass leads him back to it each time. Aang doesn’t want to be a hero, but he ultimately recognizes that he must be, because to turn his back on the role of the Avatar would be to betray everything he is.
Laia of Serra from An Ember in the Ashes
If we’re discussing reluctant Libra heroes, 17-year-old resistance spy Laia of Serra is a sure-fire mention. Without her unwavering, fierce sense of loyalty towards those she loves, Laia never could have become the catalyst for reviving a revolution, and the deeply just and altruistic traits that she displays truly define her. Throughout An Ember in the Ashes, she does not hesitate to sacrifice herself in order to save her brother, exhibiting exactly how much her devotion to him and her family outweighs her sense of self-preservation.
Laia is also strikingly empathetic, even when confronted by people who do not understand her, and is willing to reevaluate her biases if they are proven flawed. Nevertheless, Laia is far from perfect, which is what makes her a compelling hero to follow. Often, she doubts herself and her actions but does not hesitate after a choice is finally made, proving herself to be the embodiment of a Libra.
Charles Bingley from Pride and Prejudice
Compassion is a core Libra trait, and who better to exhibit it than soft-hearted Mr. Charles Bingley? From the moment of his introduction in the novel Pride and Prejudice, Bingley establishes himself as a sociably charming individual, willing to see the positives no matter where he finds himself. Despite the masculine constructs of the time, he is not averse to displaying his emotions, as proven by his inclination towards and vulnerability with his love interest, Jane Bennet. Bingley falls into that love easily, but with no ulterior motives or hesitations, suggesting a kind of innocence within his view of the world.
However, similarly to a classic Libra, he fears confrontation and conflict, causing him to accept the false perspectives of his friends despite his disagreement with them. Ultimately, though, Bingley chooses to follow his heart — which (spoiler alert!) successfully leads him to happiness.
Aimee Gibbs from Sex Education
One of the sweetest, most eccentric Libra characters is none other than 16-year-old Aimee Gibbs. Although initially introduced as naive comic relief, Aimee experiences a development after choosing to resist her natural people-pleasing tendencies by leaving an unhealthy friend group for her unpopular best friend, Maeve. Of all the aforementioned Libra-coded personalities, Aimee is perhaps the most realistic, as she struggles to balance her strengths and flaws throughout the entirety of the seasons of Sex Education.
The essence of Aimee’s character is, above all, the desire to be unconditionally loved — and, over time, she learns she doesn’t need to rely on external validation to grant herself that. Aimee is nurturing, upbeat, and creative, and never hesitates to support those who she cares about in any way that she knows how to. Admittedly, she also has her moments of insecure and materialistic behavior, but her optimism towards life leads her to be a person anyone would hope to have as a close friend.
Though there are certainly other Libra-coded characters in popular media, these four are unequivocally fantastic representations. And don’t worry — you don’t have to dedicate yourself to a life of astrology to enjoy them on screen or on the page.
