Spooky season is approaching, with colder weather, warmer drinks, and cozier books. That also means the scary stories; with that come monsters, ghosts, and demons appearing in the stories we love to read. Because of that, the supernatural romances also take the spotlight. Spooky romances are always packed with a yearning like no other, and a feeling of taboo that you don’t get from other romances. From demons to vampires, the supernatural love interests are always better than the normal ones, and here is why.
Why do we love them more?
It is a known and proven fact that humans constantly want what we can’t have. That can apply to multiple things, but there are many reasons for it, such as loving the chasing or fulfilling an unreachable dream/desire. Unfortunately, there are no vampires or demons in the world, so to satisfy that, we must read it. Not only that, but a type of allure comes with the supernatural. Half the country was hooked on a werewolf or a vampire when Twilight first hit the shelves, which is not unusual.

Certain characteristic traits are often common among supernatural creatures. Vampires have always been seen as being inherently sexual, whereas werewolves are more possessive and jealous, and demons seem to have both. When reading about them in stories, the red flags and toxicity don’t exist if it is a well-written story. Having the possession and jealousy mixed with sexual tension with no catches is something most people who read supernatural romances yearn for. When it comes to human romances, those traits always come with a red flag, one that we see far too often in real life. Supernatural romances give us something that we can never have and fulfill the desires of an impossible romance.
Why not human love interests?
Human love interests give us something we don’t want to see: the toxicity. As mentioned briefly, the supernatural love interests don’t include the red flags, as explaining their traits as being “their nature” is more justifiable. Because they are also fiction, love can be healthy and touch on our dark emotions. When a human is a love interest, the flaws are easier to point out. We see the red flags and compare them to horrible people we know in our lives, and sometimes the red flags are shown on purpose.
Human love interests can offer more frustration within a story because humans make mistakes. When you are already faced with the fact that a love interest is supernatural, you already know they aren’t perfect. However, for some reason, people forget that humans aren’t perfect, making the mistakes that much worse.
My Favorites
It is almost impossible to pick out my favorite supernatural love interests. However, these are some of my favorites when looking for an easy supernatural romance read.
Throne of the Fallen by Kerri Maniscalco
Throne of the Fallen by Kerri Maniscalco has the male protagonist as a demon, not just any demon. He is a Prince of hell and the Prince of Envy. He holds possessiveness and protectiveness over the main female character, which is so attractive in a demon that wields magic, and would be less appealing in a human man that reminds me of my ex.

The story follows the Prince of Envy and Camilia, who are stuck in a dangerous game with fae and riddles—a dangerous game of life and death. However, no matter what the stakes are, people’s hearts are on the line, and a forbidden love is precisely what people need when it comes to supernatural loves.
Invoking the Blood by Kalista Neith
Invoking the Blood by Kalista Neith is a fun and easy fantasy read. It involves a vampire who is jealous and overly sexual at times, and highly masculine. However, his masculinity doesn’t stop him from letting the female main character dominate him in the bedroom. The mix of vulnerability and masculinity is extremely attractive, paired with the natural traits of a vampire. How can you not love a man like that?

The story follows a young girl, Faye, who got an unlikely. She became a part of the race with no magic or group. However, during a trick with her sister, she ends up on the vampire prince’s radar, but not only that, but all of her enemies’ radar. Over time, she realizes that his life isn’t as people say it is. He has secrets and ways of ruling his kingdom that she could never imagine. Can she commit after knowing everything?
These are, of course, all my opinions. As a fantasy girl, the supernatural love interest always holds a special spot in my heart. Though I love a good regular romance, the forbidden love aspect, and the fact that I will never have it, make me want to read about these romances that much more.
