Deep into the summer anime season, many bangers make it hard to decide which to watch or to set aside. Along with continuing anime such as My Hero Academia and Spice and Wolf: Merchant Meets the Wise Wolf, is it worth adding a few to the watchlist? After reading through a few options, at least one (or two) will indeed go on your list.
Oshi no Ko Season 2
The intricate tale of revenge is back with season two! With Aqua taking the stage (literally) in a 2.5-stage play of a popular manga, Tokyo Blade, the son of idol Ai Hoshino, continues to investigate the entertainment industry to discover his father’s identity and the cause of Ai’s untimely death.
Aqua will have to face what he wants in life if he completes his revenge. Is there anything for him as an actor? Can he move past such a traumatic experience of losing his idol/mother? The more he dives into the complicated world of an industry that sometimes just wants to release something good to the public, and the more he sees those who work hard struggle, Aqua will question what could have been if Mother had lived that day. Aqua’s sister, Ruby, won’t be pushed to the curb this season, with the anime’s poster showing crow feathers, anime fans will be hooked if not already from season one. Manga readers know. No spoilers!

No Longer Allowed in Another World
What if famous Japanese author Osamu Dazai, as he’s about to off himself in his real-life double suicide with his lover, gets hit with the infamous “Truck-kun” into another world as a hero?
That’s exactly what happens in this anime as Dazai, or “Sensei” as he’s referred to, is transported by “Truck-kun,” a system that decides who gets chosen as a worthy individual to go to the other fantasy world. How this anime incorporates this trope as part of the story is funny but not as funny as Sensei chewing on sleeping pills like they are candy and getting a harem out of nowhere for wanting to die. The only thing sensei wants to do is find his lover, who might’ve also been transported into the fantasy world, and complete their double suicide. The dark humor is light with some sinister evil behind the scenes, this anime is a watch, just to hear Hiroshi Kamiya’s excellent voice acting.
Delico’s Nursery
Handsome vampires during the Victorian era took care of children while being a murder mystery behind the scenes. Count me in! Not much is known about this anime besides a trailer showing vampire aristocrats in a fancy mansion taking care of orphaned children. According to MyAnimeList, Dali, a promising young vampire of the Blood Pact Council, who governs all vampires, is met with resistance when Dali refuses to accept a mission by the council, opting to take care of children instead. There’s no reason at this time as to why he’s taking care of children, only that seeing men, especially vampires, try to navigate childcare is entertaining. The animation looks stellar as well another reason to check this anime out when it comes out on August 8, 2024
Shoshimin: How to Become Ordinary
Everyone wants to be seen as ordinary because being “weird” stands out a lot more, but what is ordinary? Main leads Yuki Osanai and Jougorou Kobato will both work together to figure out what kind of normal they will be before entering high school if only weird stuff stopped happening around them. Categorized as a “mystery anime,” How to Become Ordinary looks mundane, but with a song sung by the famous Eve, Sweet Memory, any anime involving that band usually is a dark anime, or this will be a simple school mystery.
My Deer Friend Nokotan
For those who love comedy, this one is for you. With vibes from anime such as The Disastrous Life of Saiki K. and Nichijou: My Ordinary Life, this gag humor involves Torako, a cute high school girl fawned by all, only no one knows she used to be a delinquent. Conveniently, a new transfer student, Noko, with real antlers on her head, can detect who has a shady past, leading to some hilarious situations as Torako tries to stop her dark secret from getting out. It’s the type of anime humor that you roll with as people involved in Noko’s messes are met with a smiling indifference.
