Latest Updates on the My Year of Rest and Relaxation Film Adaptation

After seeing Moshfegh’s Eileen film adaptation, we are left wondering how the My Year of Rest and Relaxation adaptation is coming along. Here’s what we know.

Book Culture Book News

We hopefully all know by now that the Eileen by Ottessa Moshfegh movie adaptation was a big hit among critics and fans alike. Anne Hathaway’s portrayal of Rebecca stole the hearts of many, and Thomasin McKenzie’s portrayal of Eileen was spot on for the anxious, angry, and obsessive character Moshfegh describes in her novel. But the film’s release left many of us with the question– What’s going on with the My Year of Rest and Relaxation adaptation?

Ottessa Moshfegh’s 2018 novel follows an unnamed narrator who, instead of dealing with the difficulties of being a trust-funded unemployed orphan with a best friend she hates, decided instead to take prescribed drugs from a sketchy psychiatrist in order to sleep for an entire year.

What We Know So Far

People first began catching wind of the adaptation after Margot Robbie and her husband Tom Ackerley’s production company, LuckyChap Entertainment, bought the rights to it back in 2019. LuckyChap Entertainment has produced movies such as Emerald Fennell’s Promising Young Woman and Saltburn, as well as Greta Gerwig’s Barbie.

We also know that Yorgos Lanthimos, famous for Poor Things and The Killing of a Sacred Deer is working alongside Ottessa Moshfegh in writing a script for the film. In 2023, Moshfegh told IndieWire that the script differs from the original text. She told IndieWire, “An adaptation is just an adaptation. It’s not supposed to be a carbon copy. That’s impossible. It’s a reinterpretation, it’s a translation, and it’s a really creative process.” This certainly makes sense to us, as most of the novel is told through internal monologue and would be difficult to adapt to screen as-is.

Because of Emma Stone’s past working with Yorgos Lanthimos, many have speculated that she will be in the film. When asked about this by Dazed, she declined to answer. Such has been the theme with attempting to get information about the film– many things about the project have been kept very secretive, as is Lanthimos’ style.

I think this TikTok speaks for all of us at Bookstr. This novel’s film adaptation is highly anticipated and we can’t wait to see what Lanthimos does with it! We have our fingers crossed that Emma Stone plays the protagonist.
