Author Khaled Hosseini has shown us, once again, that he is a wonderful human being. Besides being an amazing Afghan-American novelist and impactful humanitarian, Khaled is a devoted father to his two daughters. Khaled rarely posts about his children on his social media platforms, but when he does, it’s always to praise them for their achievements! His most recent Instagram post has followed suit, celebrating his twenty-one-year-old daughter Haris on her fearlessness.
As a father, I have never been prouder of her. I am delighted to now have not one but two beautiful daughters.Khaled Hosseini
Khaled Hosseini is most known in the bookish community for his works: The Kite Runner, A Thousand Splendid Suns, And the Mountains Echoed. His narratives usually deal with Afghanistan in some form or fashion and have always featured an Afghan as the main protagonist.
In an interview with CNN, Khaled noted that becoming a parent changed his outlook on writing. He said that when he became a parent, he could empathize with the agonizing decisions his characters face in his novels. He is quoted saying:
All of us grow up with these kind of archetypal notions of our parents and of the people we admire. And as we grow older, we recognize them to be more fallible than we thought.Khaled Hosseini in an interview with CNN
Much like his character, his daughter, Haris, has gone through her own metamorphosis. And we’ve yet to see these ‘fallible’ qualities in Khaled that he claims his parents have. He remarked in his post that he knew of Haris’ journey since last year, watching her navigate some very trying personal times.
Transitioning is such a complicated undertaking– emotionally, physically, socially, psychologically– but Haris has met each challenge with grace, patience, and wisdom.Khaled Hosseini
He goes on to state that he will be by Haris’ side every step of the way, as will their family. Saying, “It’s a privilege to watch her enter the world as the beautiful, wise, and brilliant woman that she is.”
Instagram commenters are praising Khaled for his openness and acceptance of his daughter. Many commenters are congratulating Haris for stepping into her truth. Many sending well wishes and hoping blesses from God; one commenter said:
as an afghan woman, I know how hard it can be to break stigmas within our culture. as her father, I am beyond proud of you for showing up and standing by her throughout her journey. for Haris, I am beyond proud of her for living her truth. she not only is facing a harsh society, but also a culture where this is a hard topic to discuss and often has been met with disregard. –for that, I am beyond grateful that she is part of the trailblazers opening up a space in our afghan community. she is a leader naviagating hard waters, and I, along with so many other afghan kids and people, are blessed to have her. thank you Haris for this. for being true to yourself and for being everything you were meant to be. you are stunning and I can’t wait to see your journey. we are all standing with you & we all love you.xoxoxoariana on Instagram
Khaled posted the same on his Facebook (which honestly made me a little anxious), but I was happy to find just as much support for Haris’ transition there as well! Many fans of Khaled’s commenting in support of Haris, as well as commending Khaled:
I have always been a big fan of your writing. Delighted to see that the empathy and sensitivity that reflects in every word you write, translates to real life too. Rare to find authors and celebrities who are wonderful role models in real life too. Thank you for showing that parenting means unconditional love and acceptance. May your tribe increase. Good luck and strength to Haris, may she always find love and understanding from all those who cross her path.Shyamashree Rudra on Facebook
So really, I just have a few things to say; congratulations to Haris! I will never be able to fully understand the struggles of the Trans community (nor do I pretend to), but I will always be standing with them in whatever fight they need me to. And congratulations for Khaled for being an incredible, supportive father through Haris’ transition. There’s always going to be negativity in the world, especially in situations such as this. However, the only thing we can hope for is for it to be handled as gracefully as Haris and Khaled have.
