Poet jessica Care moore was named Detroit’s poet laureate, a huge honor for the popular poet and Detroit native. It’s been twenty years since Detroit’s last poet laureate, so it’s a big step for the arts in Detroit and for moore. Here’s what makes this so special and why moore received the title.

Who Is Jessica Care Moore?

Throughout her career, moore has made a large impact on many creative industries, especially poetry, even planning to publish spoken word poetry audiobooks with HarperCollins. Some of her most notable poems, like I Am Detroit Summer, revolve around the city she grew up in. Her passion for Detroit shows in the work she creates, making her well-suited for the position of poet laureate.

She also runs a publishing house called Moore Black Press, which has brought attention to various poets over the years. Not only does she create work that allows her own voice to shine, but she also provides spaces where other artists can grow their talents.

She’s won various awards for her work over the years, from as early as the 2013 Alain Locke Award to as recently as the 2024 Marlowe Stoudamire Award. Being recognized as Detroit’s poet laureate comes from the years of work moore has previously put in.

What Does It Mean To Be a Poet Laureate?

Detroit has had a poet laureate since 1981, when Dudley Randall became the first poet laureate for the city. Poet laureates serve for life, and so, after Randall, came Naomi Long Madgett, and now jessica Care moore, who will serve as the third poet laureate for the city.

After the announcement by Mayor Duggan, moore has made known her appreciation across social media about her position, as well as through online interviews.
