Spunky old ladies give me hope that the best is yet to come in life. It’s easy to view aging as something scary and horrifying. Yet, spunky old women prove time and time again that there is nothing to fear, that not only is aging completely natural, it’s freeing!
As such, I have started on my own journey to becoming a spunky old broad! Though those years are far before me, I believe that there is so much to learn from older women now before I reach that age myself. This has of course come with trying to define what makes these women so incredible.
In my research, I believe I’ve collected some of the qualities of these women’s lives that spark their spunk and echo their brazenness.
Looks

Signature Glasses

Picking the right pair of bold and colorful frames can be a perfect first step to your spunky old broad ways. The one-of-a-kind pair can showcase your personality and tell the whole world from just one look about your unique identity.
Pop of Color

Dressing in with a pop of color or pattern brings a level of boldness to your look. Especially as you get older, picking just the right tone and pattern can bring a level of fun to an outfit that may otherwise lose that individual flare.
Downright Eye-Catching Jewelry

Whenever I’ve met a spunky old lady, they’ve always been accessorized to the nines in some of the most unique jewelry I’ve seen. I personally have taken this characteristic to heart with my quirky rings, but this can also mean chunky necklaces or statement earrings.
Home

Trinkets

I personally love finding out what trinkets everyone has found or collected. Trinkets explore your character and are an interesting and sweet way to express your interests. My favorite thing about trinkets is their wide variety of existence: they can be anything! Whatever interests you and brings you enough care to keep.
Color

Our houses have been washed out with grays and whites that leave our spaces cold and empty. The key to starting your transition into having a funky home is adding some deep, rich color! Add a splash of color to an accent wall or a wonderfully colorful throw to your couch to bring your old lady boldness home.
Unique Displays

Do you collect things? Do you have some unique art? Perfect! That’s a great start! Find a unique way to display this collection. Use a trinket cabinet or create a gallery wall. Mix your art with your collectables to design a vast display of your valued belongings. The goal is to make a home that screams who you are, after all that’s the heart of becoming spunky.
Funky Lighting

Banish the big light! Your funky home should thrive off of lighting that brings some warmth to the space — especially the more…original lighting sources. An old library lamp, a stained-glass corner light, a string of Christmas lights — these are all essential to bringing your funk into your home.

Lifestyle

No Guilty Pleasures
To be a funky old broad, to truly possess their brazenness, you must accept that there are no guilty pleasures: only pleasures. There should be no shame in things that make you happy or bring you joy!
Unapologetically Loud
Learning to live loudly is a hard lesson, but a necessary one. Too often we squeeze ourselves into the smallest versions of ourselves or opt for being quiet in moments of conversation; however, if we truly want to meet our goal of becoming a spunky old woman, we must learn to take up space, especially with our voices.
Peace With Age
It seems that everything is telling us that it is bad to age. I can hardly be on social media without being told five ways to prevent wrinkles or look ten years younger. In order to feel this confidence later in life, we must accept that our bodies change, and age is just a number.
I think it is all of our wishes to find peace with age and become a spunky old lady who doesn’t apologize for mistakes that are not her own, who speaks her mind without hesitation, and who shares wisdom instead of hoarding it. There’s no doubt that we all have the chance to meet these hopes today and tomorrow, so long as we find the confidence that so many spunky old ladies have.
If you need some encouragement to find this confidence, read through Bookstr’s collection of encouraging quotes.
