After nearly 30 years the Sanderson sisters rise once more. This time, in a sequel to the 1993 classic Hocus Pocus. Disney finally green-lit the project and we’ll get to see the evil sisters on screen again in September. The official trailer gives us just a glimpse at the new story, but it’s enough to get us excited for the Halloween season. We see Veep and Ted Lasso’s Sam Richardson make a quick appearance though we knew almost nothing about his character. That is until today.
A Hocus Pocus 2 Instagram fan account released a few seconds of footage in an ad for a candle line from the highly anticipated sequel to the original Hocus Pocus. The short clip features Richardson’s character, magic shop owner Gilbert, telling someone he charged a candle with magic revealing that he has magical abilities. It confirms at least one more trait in his character though there is still much we don’t know. We’ll see new characters as well as the return of the original and forever young Sanderson sisters played by Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy. The coven of witches is known for sucking the life force out of children and teens to stay young forever. It’s still as chilling as it was back in the ‘90s.

This time, Anne Fletcher took on the role of director of Hocus Pocus 2. They filmed in the fall of 2021 in Rhode Island. The new story follows Salem high school students Becca (Whitney Peak), Cassie (Lilia Buckingham), and Izzy (Belissa Escobedo) as they learn about a tradition where witches receive their magic powers on their 16th birthday. Similar to the original movie, chaos begins when they light the Black Flame Candle and awaken the Sanderson sisters again. The rest of the cast includes names like Hannah Waddingham and Tony Hale.
