Notable for her roles in Midsommar and the 2019 adaptation of Little Women, Florence Pugh has quickly become one of the most sought-after actors in Hollywood. Despite not seeing herself in the running for Greta Gerwig’s adaptation in an interview with The New York Times, she has made quite a name for herself. The English actress has since starred in the Marvel fan-favorite Black Widow as Yelena Belova alongside Scarlett Johansson. According to Variety, Pugh is adding another iconic role to her IMDB with Netflix developing a limited series based on the beloved novel East of Eden by John Steinbeck.
What We Can Expect
While still in early development, Variety confirms that Zoe Kazan will write and executive produce the East of Eden limited series. If the name Kazan sounds familiar, it might be because Zoe’s grandfather, Elia Kazan, directed the 1955 film adaptation of Steinbeck’s East of Eden. We’re interested to see how Zoe’s series will compare to her grandfather’s vision of the ambitious tale. Florence Pugh’s character is still unknown, but knowing her previous roles, we can expect another stunning performance from the actress. The 1955 film adaptation introduced the world to James Dean and was nominated for four Academy Awards, including best picture. East of Eden has remained one of the most celebrated novels, so we have high hopes that this limited series will do the story justice.
John Steinbeck’s East of Eden
American author and Nobel Prize winner John Steinbeck believed East of Eden to be his magnum opus. The novel was first published in 1952. The story is set in California’s Salinas Valley with a time period from the Civil War to the end of World War I. With a narrative that follows the intertwined fate of two families, the Hamiltons and the Trasks, a brutal rivalry unfolds. The Hamilton family consists of an Irish immigrant family with nine children. The Trask family includes wealthy father Adam, his wife Cathy, and their sons Cal and Aron.
Upon misfortune and drama, these two families fall into the pre-meditated trap of pride. As the tale begins to focus on the Trask family, readers will start find a plethora of Biblical themes related to the story of Adam and Eve and hidden religious elements in the rivalry of Cain and Abel. Steinbeck uses such details to develop his own commentary on the subject. While Steinbeck’s novel embraces the fundamental idea of evil being an inescapable human problem, it also highlights how each human has the freedom or power to overcome their evil, only by choice.
An Anticipated Limited Series
East of Eden has remained a classic novel in American literature for over half a century. It’s no surprise Netflix has decided to reimagine the original work as a limited series and cast Florence Pugh as one of our maybe leading actors. We look forward to seeing how Zoe Kazan embraces the novel in her limited series, her grandfather’s original adaptation, and the series before hers.
