Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore official trailer is out! Tina Goldstein must be wearing an Invisibility Cloak throughout the entire film. That is the only way to explain her absence in both trailers and all the movie posters.
The trailer above features picks up the story where Crimes of Grindelwald left off. It promises to deal with the new revelation that Ezra Miller’s character, Credence Barebone, is actually Aurelius Dumbledore, the long-lost Dumbledore brother of Albus, Aberforth, and Ariana. Aurelius is an Obscurus and has an incredible amount of power for someone who should have died as a child (Obscurus rarely survive to reach double digits).
In accordance with Warner Bros., The Secrets of Dumbledore is set in the 1930s and tells the story of the Wizarding World’s involvement in World War II. One nice contribution to the plot is that it isn’t all set at Hogwarts (although the magical school will definitely be making an appearance) and features the magical communities in Bhutan, Germany, and China, in addition to those that have already been established including Brazil, the United States, and the United Kingdom. As Grindelwald’s (Mads Mikkelsen) power grows, Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law) entrusts Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) and his friends on a mission that will lead to a clash with Grindelwald’s army (which Queenie defected to in the last film) and will lead Dumbledore to ponder how long he can remain on the sidelines in the approaching war.
In addition to the trailer’s release, another new poster, featuring more of the main characters was released earlier today. Once again, Tina is notably absent, suggesting that the actress is either wearing an Invisibility Cloak for the entire film or her role is being seriously reduced in this film. While the first film was primarily about Newt, Tina, Queenie, and Jacob, the appearance of Dumbledore and Grindelwald in the second film hinted at their bigger roles in the subsequent films, to the point that Jude Law and Ezra Miller get second and third billing respectively in the third film. The series seems to be becoming less and less about Newt and more and more about Dumbledore and Grindelwald! Accio, Newt!
The trailer itself brings up a lot of our memories of Hogwarts from the original Harry Potter series. In fact, the very first scene features Michael Gambon as Albus Dumbledore from Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince when he is looking into the Pensieve. After the success of Harry Potter’s 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts, it is unsurprisingly that the Fantastic Beasts franchise would choose to capitalize on that success.
