A TV adaptation of the sensational fantasy romance Fourth Wing is in the works! For those who have not yet read or heard of The Emperyean Series from NYT-bestselling author Rebecca Yarros, you’re in for a treat. The first two installments, Fourth Wing and Iron Flame, have already taken BookTok and the reading world by storm. Yarros has plans for three more books in the series, with the third set to launch in early 2025. While we await the debut of Onyx Storm, let’s explore everything we know about the upcoming TV series!

What is Fourth Wing about?

Set in the brutal Basgiath War College, Fourth Wing follows Violet Sorrengail, who has studied her whole life to be a Scribe. Best in her class and ailed with a chronic illness that has weakened her all her life, she never considered taking a different path. Until just before Conscription Day, when her mother, the commanding general, orders her to compete for a position as an elite dragon rider. I would say there’s a catch, but there are many obstacles to Violet’s success.

Physically weak and untrained, Violet enters a competition rife with death. Candidates can kill each other, dragons can kill candidates, and mistakes kill just as many. Not to mention, she’s made an enemy of the fierce Xaden Riorson before she even steps foot into her first challenge. She must find allies, train her body and mind, and learn quickly to survive not just conscription but the dangers that loom for all that live at Basgiath.

The Fourth Wing TV Adaptation

Amazon MGM Studios and Michael B. Jordan’s Outlier Society production company picked up the project and began development in October 2023, just a week before Iron Flame hit shelves. The show is spearheaded by Emmy-winning showrunner Moira Walley-Beckett, known for her hits Anne With an E and Flesh and Bone. Walley-Beckett is also known for her award-winning work as a writer for Breaking Bad, so the show’s production is in highly qualified hands. She will be collaborating with Outlier’s Michael B. Jordan, Elizabeth Raposo, and Stefano Agosto; Liz Pelletier; and author of the series Rebecca Yarros herself.

No official announcements have been made regarding casting, release, or filming dates, nor is there any confirmation of further seasons. With the first installment set to cover the events of Fourth Wing, future seasons will not be picked up until producers can gauge the success and popularity of the show’s initial season.

Now is the perfect time to pick up or revisit Fourth Wing in anticipation of the first season drop! With the show in experienced hands, readers like myself have their fingers crossed for an adaptation that stands up to the quality of the series so far.
