What follows is a week of festive mayhem: family drama, emotional re-ignition, a little heartbreak, a lot of heat, and finding your way back to the one that got away. Readers can expect sharp banter, swoony redemption, and more mistletoe than is probably legal in most states.
Holiday romances are beloved for a reason — there’s something irresistible about love set against twinkling lights and snowy scenery. What drew you to this subgenre, and how did you want Merry Me to stand out?
There’s just something delicious about the holidays. Everything feels heightened. The nostalgia, the family pressure, the cinnamon-spiced chaos. I love the juxtaposition of cozy warmth and emotional messiness. With Merry Me, I wanted to blend that holiday sparkle with the intensity of a second-chance romance. It’s not just snowflakes and sugar cookies. It’s about forgiveness, timing, and rediscovering joy when life hasn’t gone as planned. Basically, Hallmark met its funny, emotionally unhinged cousin.
The title Merry Me is clever and playful. How did you come up with it, and how does it reflect the themes of the book?
The title came to me in one of those late-night moments. It’s a play on marry me, obviously, which fits perfectly since the whole story unfolds around a Christmas wedding — but it also captures Natalie’s journey of learning how to be merry again. Love, heartbreak, and the holidays all collide, and the only way out is to choose joy, even when it’s complicated.
Tell us about the main characters. What makes their connection so electric, and how did you go about building their chemistry on the page?
Natalie and Easton are that dangerous mix of comfort and combustion. They grew up together, loved fiercely, and fell apart spectacularly. Years later, that history hums between them like static electricity. Their chemistry is born from contrast. Her sarcasm meets his charm, her fear of being hurt again clashes with his relentless determination to win her back. I built it through banter and body language. Every touch, every snarky quip…it’s all layered with unspoken longing. They can’t seem to stop orbiting each other, even when Natalie swears they should.
The holidays can be a time of joy but also reflection. How do your characters grow over the course of the story, and what personal challenges do they face?
Natalie has to face the version of herself that walked away from the person she loved most because of her fear, and Easton has to prove that fame hasn’t changed who he is at his core. They’re both learning that love isn’t about getting it perfect —it’s about showing up, even when it’s messy. By the end, both of them have to stop hiding behind pride and fear and admit that sometimes the biggest risk is letting yourself be happy again.
Without giving too much away, is there a particular scene in Merry Me that was especially fun or emotional for you to write?
Oh, absolutely. There’s a late-night snow fire pit scene that was pure magic to write…the kind that makes you forget you’re just typing on a laptop in sweats. It’s emotional, sexy, and full of tension that’s been simmering for years. I also had a blast writing about Natalie’s hysterical grandma, Memaw. Nothing says holiday spirit like a grandma who won’t let you stay with her at the inn because she thinks she’s going to get some action.
Do you have any personal holiday traditions that made their way into the story?
Definitely. My family is big on over-the-top décor. If it doesn’t twinkle, we don’t want it. That found its way into the setting, along with the idea of chosen family. We’re a loud, loving, occasionally ridiculous bunch, and I think that warmth shows up in the world of Merry Me.
If Merry Me were adapted for film, who would you envision as the perfect dream cast?
For Easton, I’d love someone with movie-star charisma but a soft, heart-on-his-sleeve core — maybe Glen Powell or Jacob Elordi. For Natalie, I picture someone with sharp comedic timing and emotional depth — Margot Robbie or Brittany Snow would absolutely nail her mix of wit and vulnerability. And for the sister, Paige? Florence Pugh in full scheming bride energy.
What do you hope readers feel when they turn the final page of Merry Me?
I want readers to close the book with that warm, sparkly ache. The one that feels like laughter through tears. I hope they believe that love can find you again, even after heartbreak, and that sometimes the most romantic thing isn’t the grand gesture…it’s the quiet decision to stay.
