Bridgerton season three is on the way and Simone Ashley—the new Viscountess Bridgerton née Kate Sharma—has declared that this new chapter will be much sexier than season two. In fact, she has described the upcoming season will be “condensation central” and will get “super steamy.”
Looking Back at Love
Bridgerton season one featured the love story and romance between Daphne Bridgerton (Phoebe Dynover) and Simon, the Duke of Hastings (Regé-Jean Page). They got married in the fourth episode of the first season, which resulted in many steamy sex scenes between the pair. However, in Bridgerton season two, the romance between Viscount, Anthony Bridgerton (Jonathan Bailey), and Kate Sharma (Simone Ashley), was much more of a slow burn, to the point that we never even saw their wedding.
However, Bridgerton season three will be cranking up the heat once more. The season will feature the romance between Colin Bridgerton (Luke Newton) and Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan). Unlike the other couples, Colin and Penelope have known each other since childhood and have had a will-they-won’t-they relationship since the first season.
The synopsis of the season stands, thus:
“Hurt by overhearing Colin disparage her to his friends, Penelope is focused on finding a husband who will respect her independence so she may continue her double life as Lady Whistledown. Colin is back from his summer travels and is disheartened to receive Penelope’s cold shoulder. Eager to win back her friendship, Colin helps Penelope boost her confidence so as to attract the perfect husband.”

At the end of season two, Penelope hears Colin scoffing at the idea of ever striking up a romance with her to his friends, a cruel and unkind remark. Especially since they are close friends, and Penelope is still on the market for a husband. In the book, Colin’s disparaging remark is made only to his brothers in the privacy of Bridgerton House, something that is more understandable.
What to Watch Out For
While it hasn’t been confirmed, it has been suggested that there might be a little time jump between seasons two and three. Recently, Claudia Jessie, who plays Eloise Bridgerton, said suggestively that they “can’t play teenagers forever.” This, coupled with the fact that Colin and Penelope’s romance is supposed to happen when Penelope is decidedly “on the shelf” and no longer marriageable material, suggests that at least a year or more has passed between the season two finale.
In addition to Colin and Penelope’s romance, season three will feature a new female companion for Penelope Featherington, Lady Tilley Arnold (Hannah New). At the end of the second season, Eloise discovered Penelope’s alter ego, Lady Whistledown, and they had a major falling out in light of the secrets that Penelope spilled. This included the scandal of her cousin, Marina, who was pregnant out of wedlock. Penelope also ratted out her best friend Eloise, who was unsupervised and unchaperoned with Theo (Calam Lynch).
All of the old major cast and characters—excluding Regé-Jean Page’s Simon, the Duke of Hastings, and Charithra Chandran as Edwina Sharma—will be returning. Francesca Bridgerton has been recast, with Hannah Dodd taking the role over from Ruby Stokes, due to scheduling conflicts.
Catchup Before Season 3 Hits
There is yet to be any confirmation when the third season will be airing, although the first two seasons are already streaming on Netflix. The prequel series, Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, has wrapped shooting but does not have a release date yet. Seeing as Bridgerton season three is still shooting, it stands to reason that the prequel series will air first, although both release dates are still unknown.
Until then, read Julia Quinn’s Bridgerton book series and watch or rewatch the first two seasons on Netflix! As Lady Whistledown would say, “Beloved readers of the ton, patience is a virtue. My return will be well worth the wait, for what the ton has been up to in your absence has been tremendous indeed….”
