Dear Readers,
This is Lady Whistledown writing to the beloved members of the Ton to declare that the trailer of Bridgerton Season 2 has been released and that the upcoming social season promises many scandals, romance and drama….
The Bridgerton Netflix series is based upon the book series of the same name by Julia Quinn’s novels set in Regency era London during the social season when debutantes are presented at court; the story centres around the love lives of the Bridgerton siblings – Anthony, Benedict, Colin, Daphne, Eloise, Francesca, Gregory and Hyacinth – as they navigate London society in search of love and friends alike.
Season 1 centres around Daphne’s love life; Season 2 promises to feature Anthony’s journey to find love. At the end of the first season, he declares that he needs to marry for duty, not for love; Daphne speculates to her husband, Simon, that perhaps Anthony will learn that it is possible to marry for love. Thanks to Anthony’s previous lover, Siena, being of unequal status to him and therefore, the impossibility of them marrying, he is now heart-broken, especially seeing as she does not wish the change her status and become what she is not for him.
In our first glimpse of Season 2, we saw Anthony with his new love interest, Kate Sharma, portrayed by a new cast member, Simone Ashley. In the trailer, Anthony is seen dancing at a ball with Kate, but that isn’t the only exciting thing about the trailer. We see Benedict, the second Bridgerton child, having a romantic liaison with a mysterious new woman and Eloise, the rebellious “Jo March” of the Bridgerton family, with two of her brothers, gambling at a horse race. Clearly, Eloise hasn’t changed and we all love her for her uniqueness and tenacity!
Perhaps the most exciting part of the trailer was the footage of Penelope Featherington penning her letters as Lady Whistledown. In Season 1, we learned that Penelope is Lady Whistledown and even wrote awful gossip about her own family in order to maintain her cover. Rather like Dan from Gossip Girl, Penelope is not above writing awful and cruel truths about her own family.
This season, however, we wonder if Penelope will be able to maintain her cover. At the end of Season 1, she was nearly caught by Eloise and barely escaped with her identity kept secret. While the initial voiceovers of Lady Whistledown in the trailer are voiced by Julie Andrews (she also voiced Lady Whistledown in Season 1), the trailer ends with Nicola Coughlan (Penelope Featherington) providing Lady Whistledown’s voiceovers. That, coupled with the early revelation that she is Lady Whistledown (series like Gossip Girl and Pretty Little Liars waited till the series finale to reveal the true culprit), hints that Penelope’s secret might not be kept secret much longer….
Stay tuned for more news about Bridgerton! Season 2 premieres on Netflix on March 25. Lady Whistledown and the gossip of the ton await….
