2024 is the year of adaptations. From books to graphic novels to cartoons, dozens of older works are getting a rebrand with an upcoming adaptation. Here are some of the most highly-anticipated page-to-screen projects happening in 2024, and everything we know about them so far.
Dune: Part II
When Denis Villeneuve’s 2021 film Dune, an adaptation of Dune by Frank Herbert, was a success, it ensured that his adaptation of the novel would continue in a direct sequel to the first film. The sequel, aptly named Dune: Part II, will pick up directly where the first film left off, following Paul Atrides as he, Chani, and the Fremen seek revenge against the people who destroyed his family. The second film will cover the rest of Villeneuve’s adaptation of Herbert’s novel and is set to be released theatrically on March 1st, 2024.
Wicked: Part I
This upcoming musical fantasy is a movie adaptation of the stage musical Wicked, which is a stage adaptation of the novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West by Gregory Maguire. The film tells the story of a witch with green skin who is framed by the Wizard of Oz and how she becomes the Wicked Witch of the West. Originally announced as one film in April 2022, Deadline Hollywood reported the story would be told in two parts, with the first part releasing on November 27th, 2024.
The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim
The newest film in the Lord of the Rings franchise is an animated fantasy film based on a story in the appendices of The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien. The film is a prequel, set over two hundred years before the events in the 2002 film The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, and tells the story of Helm Hammerhand. Helm Hammerhand is a legendary king of Rahon who must defend the kingdom against an army of Dunlendings. The film will come out in the United States on December 13th, 2024.
Based on the novel Mickey7 by Edward Ashton, this film has Robert Pattinson star as an expendable employee on an expedition. Pattinson plays the titular Mickey Barnes, a “disposable” being who regenerates a new iteration with most of his memories when the previous one dies. Micky is tasked to go on a human expedition to colonize the ice world, Niflheim. The movie will premiere on March 29th, 2024.
It Ends With Us
The popular romance novel It Ends With Us by Colleen Hoover was optioned for a film adaptation in 2019 by actor Justin Baldoni and his production company Wayfarer Entertainment. In 2023, Blake Lively and Brandon Sklenar were cast as Lily Bloom and Atlas Corrigan, with Baldoni playing Riley Kincaid. The film will be released theatrically in the US on February 9th, 2024.
Argylle by Elly Conway served as the inspiration for the upcoming film Argylle, coming to Apple+. The film is not a traditional adaptation, instead following a fictionalized version of the author Elly Conway as the plots of her spy novels start to become reality. Henry Cavill stars as the titular Agent Argylle, and Bryce Dallas Howard co-stars as Conway. The film is set to come to theaters on February 2nd, 2024, and will come out on Apple+ at a later date.
Avatar: The Last Airbender
Although Avatar didn’t originally start as a book series, the success of the original cartoon spawned a massive franchise, including a spin-off show, a series of comic books, and multiple novels set in the Avatar universe. Netflix’s live-action series was first announced in 2018, and despite skepticism of the project, has become one of the most anticipated Netflix projects for 2024. The series is set to premiere on February 22nd, 2024, and will consist of eight episodes.
The Sandman: Season 2
The Netflix series adapting The Sandman by Neil Gaiman follows Morpheus, the personification of dreams and a member of a family of beings called The Endless after he escapes from a cult that’s held him captive for the past 100 years. Now free, he sets out to reestablish order in his realm, the Dreaming. The series first dropped on August 5th, 2022, and was renewed for a second season in November 2022. Although it’s unclear when the second season will premiere, Variety confirmed production has resumed on the second season, and more episodes are expected in the next year.
3 Body Problem
The Three-Body Problem by Cixin Liu is the first book in a science-fiction trilogy that depicts the fictional past, present, and future of an Earth that has encountered an alien civilization from a nearby system of stars orbiting each other. As stated by Netflix, the series focuses on “A young woman’s fateful decision in 1960s China reverberates across space and time into the present day. When the laws of nature inexplicably unravel before their eyes, a close-knit group of brilliant scientists join forces with an unflinching detective to confront the greatest threat in humanity’s history.” Eight first-season episodes will drop on Netflix on March 21st, 2024.
Bridgerton: Season 3
The hit Netflix series Bridgerton is returning in 2024 with its third season. The upcoming season is based on Romancing Mister Bridgerton by Julia Quinn and will depict the romance between Colin Bridgerton and Penelope Featherington. Unlike the show’s previous seasons, the third season will premiere in two parts. The first part, which consists of four episodes, will premiere on May 16th, 2024, and the final four of the season will premiere on June 13th, 2024.
Apples Never Fall
A miniseries based on Apples Never Fall by best-selling thriller author Liane Moriarty is coming to Peacock. The series focuses on The Delaneys, whose lives are upended when their mother, Joy, disappears. The four Delaney children must re-examine everything they thought they knew about their parent’s marriage and their family history to solve their mother’s disappearance. The exact premiere date is currently unknown, but the show is expected to release on Peacock in March 2024.
A star-studded miniseries based on The Sympathizer by Viet Thanh Nguyen is making its way to HBO’s streaming platform Max. The series will focus on a man called the Captain, a plant from North Vietnam in the South Vietnam army. Near the end of the Vietnam War, the Captain flees to the United States and hides in a community of South Vietnamese refugees. As he struggles to adjust to his new life, the Captain spies on the community he calls home and sends information back to the Viet Cong, the communist movement. There is no set premiere date yet; HBO plans to stream the show sometime in 2024.
