Happy birthday, Cassandra Clare! To celebrate, let’s talk about some interesting facts you might not know about her.

If the incredible Young Adult novel writer’s name isn’t ringing a bell, you might recognize some of her work. She’s best known for The Mortal Instruments series, her first published novels. You might also know The Infernal Devices, The Dark Artifices, etc. If you haven’t read these, they’re an essential for YA fantasy lovers.

1. Cassandra Clare isn’t her real name!

The name is a pseudonym, otherwise known as a pen name. In other words, it’s a fake name that authors create to use instead of their actual name. Usually, the actual identity of the author remains hidden, but we know Clare’s real name: Judith Rumelt.

Although we don’t know why she decided to use a pen name, we do know where she took inspiration for that name thanks to an article by The New York Times. Her name came from a story she wrote in eighth grade titled “The Beautiful Cassandra,” which references a Jane Austen story.

2. She began as a fan fiction author.

That’s right! The notorious, award-winning YA author began by writing fan fiction. According to famousauthors.org, some of her early works include The Very Secret DiariesThe Girl’s Guide to Defeating the Dark LordMagic in the Mirrorstone, and So Fey. She took inspiration from many other stories such as Lord of the Rings.

3. She was born in Iran and travelled a lot during childhood.

Cassandra includes a biography on her website, where she mentions that she was born in Teheran, Iran, to American parents. She discusses her childhood and how she travelled the world with her parents starting at a young age. She even lived in her father’s backpack for a month as a toddler during a trek through the Himalayas.

Considering how much time she spent moving around, it makes sense that Clare found familiarity in books. And talk about writing inspiration!

4. She is friends with Holly Black.

Holly Black, another YA fantasy author, is most known for her Folk of the Air series. According to an article by MTV, the two have been friends for over 10 years, and they even live close to each other. They recently worked together on a book series called The Magisterium, and their writing style is so flawlessly integrated that even they can’t tell who wrote what parts.

5. She hates writing at home alone.

In the biography on her website, Clare talks about how she hates writing alone at home. She says she’s easily distracted by television and her cats, so she usually likes to write in restaurants and coffee shops. She also likes to write with her friends, who help keep her accountable for sticking to deadlines.
