Another week, another episode of The Last of Us that warms our hearts right before it breaks them. This week’s episode of HBO’s The Last of Us saw a major storyline play out almost exactly as it happened in the video game. And, in true HBO fashion, it was just as, if not more, sad than the original video game scene.
WARNING: The following contains spoilers for episode 5 of The Last of Us.
It’s the episode we all were emotionally preparing ourselves for. Episode five of The Last of Us saw Joel and Ellie team up with Henry and Sam as they attempted to sneak out of Kansas City undetected by Kathleen’s revolutionary group. The plan goes remarkably well, that is until the group is cornered by Kathleen and her men. But before Kathleen can avenge her brother’s death and kill Henry, hoards of infected that had been trapped underground for years make a deadly entrance.
Kathleen and her men are torn to pieces (literally), but Joel, Ellie, Henry, and Sam make it out unscathed… almost. Sam was bitten by one of the infected, and though Ellie tries to heal him with her blood, it doesn’t work. Sam turns, Henry is forced to kill his own brother, and distraught, takes his own life.
Fans knew it was coming, but I’m pretty sure I’m not wrong in saying there were very few viewers with dry eyes after that episode. Twitter users weren’t faring well and made their emotional turmoil known through some hilarious tweets. As always, we’ve rounded up the best ones for you. Relive all the trauma through memes, because that’s a healthy coping mechanism, right? Right?!
