July 30 is Paperback Book Day, which marks the date Penguin published its first paperback in 1935. Back in the early 1900s, hardcovers ruled. They were a sign of quality literature, whereas paperbacks were often cheaply made and of poor quality. However, as the railway became a more widespread means of travel, the demand for portable entertainment to keep people occupied during their lengthy train trips increased. Thus, paperbacks skyrocketed in popularity, making iconic literature from the likes of Agatha Christie and Ernest Hemingway all the more accessible and affordable to readers.

Today, paperbacks remain beloved, and it’s no surprise why. Don’t get me wrong, I love a good hardcover (and the occasional e-book), but there’s a special place in my heart for paperbacks. They’re lightweight and bendable for optimal comfort while reading, and they make the perfect travel companions, slipping into any carry-on bag, beach tote, or picnic basket with ease. If you’re a paperback lover like me, you won’t want to miss these new paperback releases coming to shelves in 2024!
