The Weasley That Never Was
It has come to light that Mafalda Weasley, Ron and co's unpleasant cousin was supposed to be in Harry, Hermione, and Ron's year in Hogwarts. She was, however, supposed to be sorted into Slytherin...
The daughter of Molly Weasley's second cousin, a stockbroker in the muggle world, Mafalda was supposed to be as academically brilliant as Hermione, sparking a rivalry between the two. She originally served the purpose that Rita Skeeter ultimately fulfilled, of leaking information surrounding the Goblet of Fire.
"Rita was always going to be in the book," said Rowling, "but I built her up, because I needed a kind of conduit for information outside the school. Originally, this girl fulfilled this purpose... Unfortunately, however bright I made her, there were obvious limitations to what an eleven-year-old closeted at school could discover, whereas Rita Skeeter, whom I subsequently built up to fulfill Mafalda’s function, was much more flexible."
