Love Songs & Other Lies is about ex-first-loves who are reunited on a battle of the bands reality show tour bus. (Awkward.) So it’s clearly no surprise that music is involved. But beyond the fictional song writing and performances, you might miss all of the real songs making low-key cameos, if you don’t know what to look for. So here are a few to start you on your musical Easter egg hunt through Love Songs & Other Lies (published by Tor Teen) :

“Yellow Shirt” by The Icarus Account
You know those romance novel meet-cutes where the couple bumps into each other (literally) in the hallway and notebooks go flying as their eyes lock? Yeah, Cam and Vee don’t have one of those. Instead, they have a romantic almost meet-cute in the most unromantic place ever: a nursing home. Vee is visiting her grandmother and Cam is on the other side of the curtain visiting his own, when Vee plays her favorite song, “Yellow Shirt”. So basically it’s a dating-version of The Voice. The song is referenced again when the pair eventually meet face-to-face, but you’ll have to find that one yourself.
and then I hear acoustic guitars. The music is faint at first—probably playing on her phone. The four of us sit in silence as the singer joins in, describing a girl who “always wears yellow on days when she feels like herself.” It’s one of those songs that sounds happy and sad all at once, and when it’s done I find myself hoping she’ll play another. She doesn’t.
“Say Something” by A Great Big World
This song actually inspired me to write Love Songs & Other Lies. I heard it on the radio and it was so anguished and love-filled, I couldn’t help but have this really vivid mental picture of a couple breaking up, despite a very obvious love. So the very first words I wrote were that scene I saw in my head. From there, I figured out who the characters were (musicians) and how they had gotten to that moment (wouldn’t you love to know). While reading the alternating Then and Now chapters, readers get to figure out what brought this couple together and led to their eventual demise, while simultaneously experiencing the aftermath of it.
“It’s not that, Vee.” When I reach for her this time she flinches like my touch will physically hurt her. I feel like her touch is the only thing that can fix me.
“Then say something.”
But I can’t . There isn’t anything I can say that will make this better, because the truth is just as ugly as the lie.
“Dakota“ by A Rocket to the Moon
I can’t actually tell you too much about this one because it’s a tad too spoilery for my tastes. Let’s just say that there’s a character named Dakota, and this may or may not be a song written about her. This song came up randomly on my Pandora station when I was drafting Love Songs & Other Lies—long after I had named characters—and I knew it had to make an appearance because the lyrics fit the story so perfectly! This is by far one of my favorite musical Easter eggs in the book, and I secretly wish all readers could have it playing during that scene!
The band’s new song is called “Dakota,” and it’s a rock ballad about falling in love with a girl before you even know her.
“Cover of the Rolling Stone” by Dr. Hook
Fair warning, this song is OLD SCHOOL. I discovered it during a rabbit-hole moment on Spotify, and I knew it was the kind of weird old song a bunch of future-rockstars on a reality competition would sing as they took shots and got ready to party. And that’s totally what they do. My sincerest apologies that this incredibly weird-but-catchy song will be in your head for the next three hours. Trust me, I know your pain!
On the cover of the Rolling Stone!” Anders sings, with an exaggerated rasp, pounding his hands along the wood-paneled hallway as he walks into the dimly lit room. The Room, as they call it, is a lounge space inside The Tabernacle—a historic church converted into a music venue in the heart of Atlanta.
