Colin Firth and Julie Walters to Star in ‘The Secret Garden’ Adaptation

Jack Thorne, best known for his work on Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, is currently at work on developing a new adaptation of The Secret Garden for the big screen.

The film will be directed by Marc Munden (Utopia) and will co-star Colin Firth and Julie Walters.

Veering further into the future than the the 1911 novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett, the film will take place in 1947 just after World War II and lead up to the partition of India.

The Secret Garden (which is, personally, one of my favorite stories to ever exist…ever) details the life of Mary Lennox, an angsty, sassy, Aubrey Plaza-esque ten year-old girl who is sent to live on her extremely wealthy uncle’s estate. In the original novel, Mary befriends a cast of characters including Colin (her sickly cousin who also lives on the estate) and Dickon (a young boy who works on the estate.) In the new adaptation, however, Mary is said to befriend a robin who leads her into the forbidden garden her uncle claims to not exist.

The rest of the story is a magical, heartwarming-yet-eerily dark journey of childhood, growing up, mourning, loss, and self-discovery.

I can’t wait to see what else this new adaptation has in store for us!
