To celebrate National Cat Day and the upcoming night of Halloween, we’re shining the spotlight onour favorite black cat, Salem Saberhagen. Salem is the familiar of Sabrina and in most adaptations, he is a witch who was turned into a cat and sentencedd to stay with the Spellman family for an indefinite amount of time. Sabrina the Teenage Witch has had many television adaptions, however, the most notable one is the 1996 version, where the feline familiar shines with his sassy personality!

In the 1996 television adaptation of Sabrina the Teenage Witch, Salem is a 500-year-old witch stuck in the body of cat and sentenced to be Sabrina’s familiar for an indefinite amount of time due to his crime of trying to take over the world. Like with any cat, he is none too happy with being told what to do and doesn’t like the idea of serving anyone but himself. In the 1996 television adaptation, he was equipped with barbed wit and sarcasm along with a bit of greed and selfishness sprinkled in. If Salem wasn’t wailing in distress for his favorite cat treat, Lizard Flakes, then he was getting Sabrina into some pyramid scheme to win riches.

Though the pun-filled kitty cat was always throwing shade at Sabrina, her aunts and let’s be real, anyone who dared step foot into the house, he actually loved (and was fond of) the Spellmans and Harvey. Salem is a good kitty, he cared deeply for Sabrina and served as a mentor to her, helping guide the young witch whether to do the right thing or bring a little excitement (or trouble) into her life. Although the 2018 version of the Salem doesn’t speak or deal out witty humor, he still serves as the familiar to Sabrina and goes beyond his duty to protect her.
