Rockstar Elliott Smith had a tattoo of the gentle character Ferdinand the Bull, who was uninterested in butting heads or fighting, instead preferring to smell flowers and be peaceful. Actor and writer Lena Dunham also sports a Ferdinand tattoo.

Actor Megan Fox has a partial quote from Act V, Scene III of Shakespeare’s ‘King Lear’ tattooed on her shoulder. The phrase, ‘we will all laugh at gilded butterflies’ is a partial quote from the character of King Lear, who speaks it in the play’s final scene.  He says “… so we’ll live, and pray, and sing, and tell old tales, and laugh at gilded butterflies.”

Evan Rachel Wood has a line of verse from original goth Edgar Allan Poe tattooed on her back. It reads ‘all that we see or seem is but a dream within in a dream.’

Author Jonathan Lethem has a tattoo inspired by one of his own literary heroes Philip K. Dick. In an essay he wrote on Dick, he stated: “I impetuously went into a tattoo parlor and had the spray can logo from the first American edition of ‘Ubik’ tattooed on my upper left arm.”
