Bing Liu, Oscar Nominated Director, to Direct Adaptation of ‘On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous’

Bing Liu, a Chinese-American director and cinematographer, best known for directing the documentary ‘Minding the Gap,’ which was nominated for Best Documentary Feature at the 91st Academy Awards, is now attached to direct the adaptation of Ocean Vuong’s debut novel On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous

The book is being adapted by A24, an independent entertainment company which has distributed and/or produced films and TV shows such as ‘Lady Bird,’ ‘Moonlight,’ and ‘Euphoria.’ The news of the adaptation and Bing Liu being attached to the project were announced on the A24 podcast, in which Vuong mentioned that Liu is consulting with him for the script.

On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous has gained a lot of critical acclaim since its release and was longlisted for the 2019 National Book Award for Fiction, the Carnegie Medal in Fiction, the 2019 Aspen Words Literacy Prize, and the PEN/Hemingway Debut Novel Award, shortlisted for the 2019 Center for Fiction First Novel Prize, and was the winner of the 2019 New England Book Award for Fiction.

 

 

The novel is a letter written by the narrator, Little Dog, to his mother who cannot read. In the letter he recounts his family history, going back to the Vietnam war, while also exploring race, class, and masculinity.

There is not a set release date yet, but we are looking forward to seeing this beautiful novel on the big screen soon.
