Are You Afraid of the Dark?

‘IT’ Screenwriter’s ‘Are You Afraid of the Dark’ Movie Gets Release Date

Last month, we told you iconic 90s television show Are You Afraid of the Dark was heading to the big screen, but now it has a release date. Yesterday, December 6th, Paramount announced the movie will be released on October 11th, 2019. Happy Halloween, y’all!

The original show, which aired on Nickelodeon from 1992 to 1996 and again from 1999 to 2000, featured a group of teenagers who called themselves The Midnight Society. The group traded ghost stories around a campfire and starred legend icon stars such as Ryan Gosling, Neve Campbell, Elisha Cuthbert, Ross Hull, Daniel DeSanto, and Once Upon a Time’s JoAnna Garcia Swisher.

Gary Dauberman, who scared our socks off with this fall’s Stephen King adaptation IT, is screenwriting and producing the film and promises the movie will be more intense than the show; “The show is about the shared experience of telling stories — especially scary ones. We’re going to celebrate that with this movie and honor the darker, scarier tone of the show, which was really groundbreaking for Nickelodeon at the time. I hope The Midnight Society approves.”

The film still does not have a director attached, but it looks promising for sure. Also, still no word on if any former cast members will make an appearance in the reboot, but here’s hoping!

‘IT’ Screenwriter Rebooting ‘Are You Afraid of the Dark?’

As a child, I was a fan of Are You Afraid of the Dark? By that, I mean I’ve completely blocked out the terror of that traumatic show and have replaced it with feelings of dumb bliss when I know for a fact I watched it with one eye closed from behind the couch. Well, I won’t be able to hind from my past for much longer, as the screenwriter of the hit Stephen King adaptation IT is adapting Nickelodeon’s scariest show (not counting Ren and Stimpy) for the big screen.

That’s right, Gary Dauberman is taking on the show. Each episode began with a meeting of ‘The Midnight Society,’ a group of teenagers who would gather around a campfire and tell stories involving all manner of ghosts, witches, ghouls, goblins, and evil.

Dauberman, who could be getting his hands on an Oscar for his work on IT, told The Hollywood Reporter “the show is about the shared experience of telling stories – especially scary ones. We’re going to celebrate that with this movie and honor the darker, scarier tone of the show, which was really groundbreaking for Nickelodeon at the time. I hope the Midnight Society approves.”

Dauberman will also produce the film, which will be overseen by Paramount Pictures’ Paramount Players.

Until then, I will be preparing to face my childhood demons. Please send prayers.
