‘His Dark Materials’ “Perfect for TV Adaptation”, Says Star Ruth Wilson

His Dark Materials is coming to HBO this fall. The show is a joint effort between HBO and the BBC, and stars Ruth Wilson, Dafne Keen, James McAvoy, and Lin-Manuel Miranda. In an interview with The Guardian, Ruth Wilson spoke highly of the show, noting:

His Dark Materials is perfect for television.

She went on to say that with Game of Thrones, HBO has proven that television is no longer film’s poorer sister. In fact, she noted books are inherently better for the small screen, saying you can really take your time with a book’s content as opposed to rushing through its contents in an hour and a half on the big screen.

There’s no difference anymore and in a way, if you’re going to tell a drama – which this is, as well as being fantasy – you’ve got more time. You have eight hours to explore that, rather than an hour and a half.

She says the show ‘feels special’ and she is very hopeful about how it will be received by general audiences. The scale of it would have been impossible years ago but nowadays, fantasy can look just as epic, if not more so, on the small than in film. Having more time to explore the world and get to know the characters are huge pluses as well.

His Dark Materials is a trilogy of epic fantasy books by Philip Pullman. It is a coming-of-age tale centering around two children in a strange alternative Oxford. While magic, witches, and giant armored polar bears exist in this universe, themes of spirituality and physics are also explored. The books have attracted controversy for their criticism of religion, but this hasn’t stopped them from being enormously popular, garnering numerous awards and reaching bestsellers lists. The iconic series will see its debut this fall on HBO and we cannot wait.

Canceled Film ‘Mouse Guard’ Posts Demo Reel, Showing Us What Could Have Been

The Mouse Guard movie is officially dead. Disney has scrapped Fox’s planned adaptation of the popular graphic novel series by David Petersen. There were hopes the project was just delayed or finding a new home, but alas, the project has officially been canceled. Director Wes Bell confirmed this sad news via Twitter:

While it’s a pity Mouse Guard won’t see the light of day, Petersen also shared some cool stuff that might have represented what the final movie could have looked like. Petersen celebrated the enormous effort the pre-production team had done for the movie in an i09 article in which he showcased sculptures, pre-production art, and the studio that would have been used. The demo reel made for the film was posted by Wes Ball on his YouTube channel, and it showcased what could have been.

While obviously incomplete and lacking any audio, the demo reel captures the feeling of the books excellently. Notable scenes from the demo reel include a showcase of the Mouse Guard society; multiple clashes between mice that feature cool, flashy choreography; and giant creatures such as turtles, crows, and snakes that almost function as dragons to the minuscule mice.

The screenwriter also lamented the project’s death and said so in a Tweet, in which he attached the ENTIRE SCREENPLAY online for anyone to read:

This is an incredible level of insight for a project that’s been canned. We can tell everyone attached to this was extremely passionate about Mouse Guard, and hopefully, someday, it can begin life again as a film adaptation. In the meantime, check out the demo reel below and see what could have been.

‘Mouse Guard’ to Star ‘LoTR’s Andy Serkis, ‘GoT’s Thomas Brodie-Sangster

Fantasy fans, rejoice! The Mouse Guard adaptation has confirmed two major actors have joined its (tiny) cast. Mouse Guard is a graphic novel series written and illustrated by David Petersen. The series is set in world that mimics the Middle Ages, inhabited by mice. There are no humans in this world but plenty of predators, forcing the mice into a constant struggle for survival as they battle against snakes, the harsh elements, and each other. The stories revolve around the titular Mouse Guard, a sacred order of warrior mice who protect their fellows and grant them safe passage through the wilderness.

According to this article from Kotaku Australia, Lord of the Rings’ Andy Serkis and Game of Thrones’ Thomas Brodie-Sangster have been announced to star in the feature length film adaptation. Brodie-Sangster will be playing Lieam, one of the newest and youngest members of the Guard. Andy Serkis, meanwhile, will be playing the fearsome villain Midnight, a blacksmith turned tyrant who makes war against the Guard.

The adaptation will be using motion capture to be creating its cast of colorful mice, although there is no word if it will be live action or CGI yet. Andy Serkis, who has made his name playing motion capture characters like Gollum from Lord of the Rings, Caeser from Planet of the Apes, and Supreme Leader Snoke of Star Wars, is a natural casting choice. Production of the film is slated to begin this May, with Wes Bell slated to direct.

We look forward to seeing this unique fantasy series brought to the big screen and will keep our ear open for further updates!
