‘Mary Poppins’ Sequel is Headed Our Way

The magical, fun-loving, umbrella-wielding nanny is back. Disney is set to develop a sequel to the 1964 film, which will again be a musical. It is yet to be announced who will take Julie Andrews’s much-loved, Oscar-winning role.

According to Nylon, Hollywood’s “go to guy for big-budget, high-profile musicals, [Rob Marshall] has already signed to direct.” Marshall directed Disney’s Into the Woods (2014) film adaptation, which earned $199 Million worldwide. The film will feature an original score by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, responsible for the music of the Broadway shows Hairspray and Catch Me If You Can. Songwriter Richard Sherman, who co-composed some of the original film’s music with his late brother, Robert, has expressed his support for the film.

The first Mary Poppins film was based on P.L. Travers’ series, whose own story was made into a Disney film titled Saving Mr. Banks in 2013. Disney has stated that the sequel will maintain some of the story’s original plot lines, but major aspects are to be tweaked. Notably, the movie will be set in Depression-era London, 20 years after the original film. Unlike the 1964 original, which mainly focused on the first book in the eight-book series, this version will follow Mary Poppins through the other seven books and her escapades with the Banks family. The series was published between 1934 and 1988.

Excited fans have been throwing around names of who should play the next Mary Poppins, and Moviefone has even picked out six actresses who they think are worthy of the part.  Who do you think should revive the coveted role?
