Poster Revealed for Enchanting ‘Maleficent’ Sequel

Moving up on the release schedule for a Fall 2019 release (Fall 2019? That’s this year!) is the sequel to 2014’s Maleficent, entitled Maleficent: Mistress of Evil.

Disney offered an insider preview when production began last May, calling the film:

A fantasy adventure that picks up several years after Maleficent, in which audiences learned of the events that hardened the heart of Disney’s most notorious villain and drove her to curse a baby Princess Aurora, Maleficent II continues to explore the complex relationship between the horned fairy and the soon to be Queen, as they form new alliances and face new adversaries in their struggle to protect the moors and the magical creatures that reside within.

Now, the film is back in our movie-going consciousness with a cool new poster:

Isn’t it snazzy?

Angelina Jolie, the star of the film, first hinted at a sequel back in 2014 in an interview with The Hollywood Reportewith a sly “maybe I’ll get the chance to play her again.”

Then we had to wait until April 25, 2016 for Disney to finally give us the official word; in the original Variety report, Disney also confirmed Jungle Book 2 (where is that, Disney?) and Mary Poppins 2 (remember that this past December?).

Once Joachim Rønning was brought on board as director—replacing Robert Stromberg—we got the hint that filming was expected to start in the first quarter of 2018.

In April, Variety dropped an exclusive—Ed Skrein (who played Ajax in Deadpool) was cast as the film’s villain, and, in May, they also offered up an exciting announcement that Harris Dickinson had replaced Brenton Thwaites in the role of Prince Phillip.

There have been other actors announced to be in the film, including Chiwetel Ejiofor—who will voice Scar in the 2019 remake of The Lion King. Hopefully, we have more news before the film comes out, but personally I don’t want any spoilers until October 18, 2019 when Angelina Jolie is back up on the big screen wearing the iconic horns of a big bad from Disney’s classics.

Disney Villains Series in Development!

As Disney prepares to launch its new streaming service, Disney+, news about the various projects being developed for the service continue to come out. Now, a new show has been announced based on some classic Disney characters.

Disney and ABC will be developing Book Of Enchantment, a television show based on a series of novels by Serena Valentino. It focuses primarily on Disney villains like Maleficent and Ursula and how their stories interconnect in an epic fantasy world. Since the project has just been announced, there is no word yet on casting or filming dates.

Disney+ is expected to launch later this year. Previously announced shows for the service include Marvel series based on Loki and Scarlet Witch, a television version of High School Musical and the newest season of Star Wars: The Clone Wars. Several movies are also being made for the service, including another Muppets reboot as well as an updated version of Don Quixote.

Celebrate Disney Artists With These New Disney Villains Stamps!

In honor of the Walt Disney Studios Ink & Paint Department, the U.S. Postal Service has released a stamp collection of ten Disney villains.

The announcement came from the D23 Expo over the weekend, and was easy to overlook with some of the other massive announcements. There’s no better way to send a birthday card than a picture of Cruella de Vil.
