We Need to Talk About Harry Potter’s Witch Hats

So you may or may not remember in the first scene of the Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone film where Dumbledore and Professor McGonagall wear cool, pointy wizard hats as they walk through Privet Drive.

The same hats are spotted again amongst the crowds at Diagon Alley, among teachers at Hogwarts, and most iconically, on the students in the Great Hall at the end of the film where they throw them up in the air.

As one Reddit user said, “They threw them up into the air and forget them.” That’s exactly what happened.

The fashion of Hogwarts slowly deteriorates as the films progress with McGonagall losing her hat and even the holy trinity of Harry, Hermione, and Ron abandoning their robes by the final film. What is the deal with the small, but consistent deterioration and forgotten fashion staples of Hogwarts?

The author herself tried to explain away these inconsistencies in the hats of Hogwarts, but I’m just not convinced. “Standard wizard clothing comprises plain robes, worn with or without the traditional pointed hat, and will always be worn on such formal occasions as christenings, weddings and funerals.” Rowling also noted that the pointed hats are a “matter of cultural pride.” If they truly are, then explain to me why even the most anti-muggle witches and wizards are seen without them on a regular basis.

A very apparent inconsistency of hats in the films is clearly seen at the wedding of William Weasley and Fleur Delacour in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part One.

All but one of the wedding’s attendees are wearing hats. ONE.

If we’re still going by the rules as explained by Rowling, all of the wedding’s attendees should have been wearing their hats. As absurd as they may have looked, they are supposed to be a crucial part of a witch or wizard’s attire at weddings.

Another explanation to where the pointed hats have gone can be attributed to Reddit user TheMockingjay which explained, “Umbridge burned them.”

The only way to truly find out what happened is in J.K. Rowling’s next book, Harry Potter and the Return of the Wizard Hats

Chocolate Eggs

Take a Crack at This Chocolatey Hogwarts ‘Sorting Egg’

Easter is about a month away so, naturally, all I keep seeing on store shelves are eggs and bunnies. White chocolate, dark chocolate, cream, caramel—you name it, it’s Easter-themed! The truth is, you’re never too old for a candy egg, which is exactly why this bakery cast a spell on their sweet holiday treat for the masses.

The Slattery Patissier and Chocolatier in Manchester recently posted a picture of their brand new sorting ‘Sorting Egg’! This triple-chocolate Easter egg is in its classic form, but adorned with the notable slouchy Sorting Hat, and a wand at its side.

For about $20, this egg doesn’t just wear the sorting hat, it is the sorting hat! When you break its chocolate shell, you’ll find a scroll inside that tells you which house you’re in. Every egg is a surprise so you don’t know what you’ll get until you crack that sucker open.

Slattery told The Sun about the creative atmosphere on the shop:

We are a very creative environment, and give our staff a lot of free rein when it comes to coming up with new ideas. One of our cake decorators made this for his partner last year, and we loved it and decided to run it this year. The demand has gone crazy, we have had enquiries from as far as Milan, Italy. Unfortunately because they are all handmade, they are very delicate so they are collection only from our shop in Manchester!

This looks as creative as it is sweet, and as magical as it is festive. What’s more exciting: The chocolate or your official Hogwarts House scroll? We’ll let you decide that. Check out Slattery’s site here!

JK Rowling Has Some Magical Advice For Aspiring Writers

J.K. Rowling is one of the most inspiring artists of all time. Her literary works have inspired the artistic minds of millions of fans and she continues to inspire through her words.

After one Twitter user discussed her writers’s block, citing her desire yet inability to write like Rowling or Stephen King, the Harry Potter author replied with a touching message.

Here’s the original post:

J.K. Rowling Bares All In CNN Interview

J.K. Rowling, always on the cutting edge of popular literature, has revealed a new trick up her very wide sleeve: a manuscript written entirely on a dress.

In an interview with CNN, Rowling revealed that she wrote the peculiar manuscript for her 50th Birthday Party. The theme of that party? “Come as your own private nightmare. And I went as a lost manuscript,” Rowling dished.

On a more serious note, Rowling discussed the origins of Harry Potter’s story—specifically his cooped-up existence in the cupboard in the home of his callous aunt and uncle. Pregnant with her daughter, Rowling came across a newspaper story about a Czech orphanage “where this boy, among many other children with special needs, was being kept, I would say, at least 20 hours out of 24 in a cage-bed.” Horrified by the thought of being kept enclosed, voiceless and hopeless of relief, Rowling would eventually draw from the story to envision Harry’s life before Hogwarts.

She would also go on to found the charity Lumos, an organization dedicated to helping children escape institutionalization around the world.

As one of the creators of the fabric of modern pop culture, it seems fitting that Rowling would choose to write on a piece of clothing.
