Co-founding with her husband Jordan Miller, Dr. Miller established Academy Chicago after she wrote A Guide to Non-Sexist Children’s Books, while working on a PhD in English literature at Northwestern University. The Academy Chicago published erudite nonfiction titles in a number of genres. It was known for its British mysteries, classics in Victorian literature, and works in translation.

New York Times Books once commented on the press:

… Academy Chicago Limited is a young publishing house that is winning esteem from literary folk across the country … Anita and Jordan Miller … publish books dear to their hearts – attractively made, mostly paperbound children’s books, feminist books and new editions of hard-to-come-by literary treasures from the past.

In 2014, the Millers sold Academy Chicago to Chicago Review Press Inc. Through the deal, Academy Chicago became the company’s fifth imprint and began publishing fiction for the first time.

According to Publisher Weekly, Miller’s son Jordan recalled that his mother was “that rare combination of acquirer and editor, who gave Academy Chicago its character, both in discovering impressive new talent and in reclaiming many out-of-print gems from the past.”

A memorial service for Dr. Miller will be held on August 31, 4:30 pm-7:00 pm, at the Self Help Home, 908 West Argyle, in Chicago.

Our condolences to the Miller family. Her death is a great loss to the publishing and literary world.
