Mean Girls Star Lindsay Lohan is in the midst of a publishing scandal.
The world has been rocked by the coronavirus, and people are being forced to stay indoors to prevent the spread. Businesses have been forced to shut down, and Amazon has put priority items on top of their delivery lists. Books have taken a back seat on Amazon until the end of April, and The Strand and Barnes and Noble along with hundreds of other bookstores across the country have closed until further notice, but what does that mean for book publishers?

Right now the e-book and digital audiobook companies are doing well in keeping readers reading. However, some brick and mortar stores are trying to switch to online, due to only a handful of book distributors remaining open for now. Unfortunately, the online orders are barely scratching the surface of what bookstores do on a typical day. So, if the remaining distributors are shut down, then the bookstores that are running strictly on online orders are going to be in trouble. The Strand had to lay off 188 workers, though they hope they can rehire them once they reopen.
As for the publishing houses, it’s hard for them to promote and produce new books when author tours are being canceled and book printings are on hold. Layoffs could be coming next, and then what? The Big Five; Simon and Schuster, Penguin Random House, Hachette Book Group, HarperCollins, and Macmillian already backed out of BookExpo and Bookcon. The event has been pushed back to the end of July, but right now their main publishers are not attending. So many books that were in the works are now put on hold, and nobody really knows what will happen when this over.
One thing we can count on is authors having plenty of time to write, so by the time this pandemic comes to a close, there will not be enough literary agents for all the manuscripts that will be overflowing their desks and emails. So, if you’re a writer you should be writing as much as you can right now! Work on your craft and continue to buy books from distributors for as long as they’re open.
Keep reading. Keep writing. Stay Home.

Star of Reading Rainbow and Star Trek: Next Generation, and host of hit podcast ‘LeVar Burton Reads’, LeVar Burton, is hoping to livestream his readings to ease and entertain the minds of many.
I’ve been busting my brain for about a week now trying to figure out how to do a live-streamed version of #LeVarBurtonReads. I figured that during this difficult time I could contribute by reading aloud to folks who could use some diversion for themselves and their families.
— LeVar Burton (@levarburton) March 24, 2020
In his podcast, Burton “invites you to take a break from your daily life, and dive into a great story”, as he reads some of the best short fiction. ‘LeVar Burton Reads’ has a 5.0 star rating on Apple Podcasts, with over 10k reviews. One listener even stipulating that Burton’s podcast is “perfect to listen to during this crazy time in the world.”
Now, LeVar hopes to livestream his reads to the masses, as a way to distract and soothe anybody who may be distressed or anxious during this COVID-19 apocalypse *ahem* I mean, crisis. The main problem that Burton faces is acquiring short fiction for free, within copyright restrictions. In a heartwarming turn of events, and show of creative unity, author Neil Gaiman offered up his oeuvre to the actor and reader.
You have my blanket permission for any of my stories Levar.
— Neil Gaiman (@neilhimself) March 25, 2020
Gaiman was not alone in this offer, as many more jumped in to provide LeVar with the means, and creative license, to fulfill his wish of a livestream version of his popular podcast. HarperCollins offered LeVar access to their Children’s titles until the end of May, and those involved in organisations and genre groups have suggested their writers may also comply. Beyond the big names and the big five, independent writers have offered up their own work free-of-charge, and many fans have shared little-known free works such as many classic novels.
The community has truly come together to help with his project, and with any luck, LeVar’s livestreams will be available in the coming weeks.

The series hails from writers JD Payne and Patrick McKay and director Juan Antonio (J.A.) Bayona. Amazon is reportedly putting out all the stops for the show, intent on making it a massive, big budget adaptation of the source material. Although Amazon has not confirmed who Poulter is playing yet, it is widely believed by several sources that he will play the show’s leading man.

Although again not confirmed, it is believed that Poulter and Kavenagh will play the two leads: Beldor and Tyra

Good news for fans of Hilary Mantel! Her final historical novel, centered around protagonist Thomas Cromwell, completing the trilogy of works around the life of the famous English statesman, according to The Guardian. The first two novels were titled Wolf Hall and Bring Up the Bodies, the first novel charting Cromwell’s rise to greatness, while the second began to show the situation that would lead to Cromwell’s real life execution. The final novel, entitled The Mirror and the Light, will cover the final four years of Cromwell’s life, leading to his death by beheading in 1540.

It’s been eight years since the last segment of the Cromwell story, so it should come as no small release to fans to see that publisher HarperCollins has officially announced that The Mirror and the Light will debut in early 2020, March to be exact. For her part, Hilary Mantel said she had a ‘long journey’ with her protagonist and hopes that readers will see his life through to the end as she has. The publisher has noted the final novel is every bit as engaging as the first two, being immersive and casting a new light on politics through the novel’s themes. The novel plays out like a relationship between predator and prey, as Thomas finds himself losing allies, surrounded on all sides, as the clock ticks closer to the inevitable as the year of his death looms on the horizon.
Mantel answered a few questions from fans, including whether she had trouble killing off her longtime protagonist. In response, she said:
“People ask me if I’m having trouble killing off Thomas Cromwell. No, why would I? It is 10 years’ worth of effort and it is lovely to have the encouragement of people who are waiting for it, but that’s why I want to deliver them something that is the very best.”
Well, it certainly feels like the author is committed to ending the series on the best possible foot and sticking to her guns! This is sure to be a huge release when it comes next year. Are you excited? Tell us!
