Sarah J. Maas Fans: This Queer Sci-Fi Story Explores What Humanity Really Means

Sarah J. Maas fans, take note: there’s a new fantasy queen about to take over your reading life. Award-winning screenplay and short story writer Nina Varela’s debut novel Crier’s War is an Own Voices fantasy epic that will have you on the edge of your seat from the first page. It has been described by Booklist as “Rife with mystery, romantic tension, and political intrigue… perfect for readers craving queer fantasy with dense worldbuilding.”

From debut author Nina Varela comes the first book in an Own Voices, richly imagined epic fantasy duology about an impossible love between two girls—one human, one Made—whose romance could be the beginning of a revolution.

Perfect for fans of Marie Rutkoski’s The Winner’s Curse as well as Game of Thrones and Westworld.

After the War of Kinds ravaged the kingdom of Rabu, the Automae, designed to be the playthings of royals, usurped their owners’ estates and bent the human race to their will.

Now Ayla, a human servant rising in the ranks at the House of the Sovereign, dreams of avenging her family’s death…by killing the sovereign’s daughter, Lady Crier.

Crier was Made to be beautiful, flawless, and to carry on her father’s legacy. But that was before her betrothal to the enigmatic Scyre Kinok, before she discovered her father isn’t the benevolent king she once admired, and most importantly, before she met Ayla.

Now, with growing human unrest across the land, pressures from a foreign queen, and an evil new leader on the rise, Crier and Ayla find there may be only one path to love: war.

I know. Before you ask, here’s the preorder link. And though you definitely don’t need any more convincing after reading that enticing blurb, I’m just going to keep going, because I am EXCITED about this book.

Though LGBTQAI+ representation has undoubtedly become more common in recent years, it is still super exciting to see this representation manifesting in new and different ways, across all types of fiction. This is something Varela is passionate about, telling blog Book Bratz that “Homophobia doesn’t exist in the world of Crier’s War; Crier and Ayla never experience any suffering or oppression because of their sexualities; but I am queer and I live on Earth and some of my world bled through. I don’t want to spoil anything, but I think there’s a certain part of Crier’s story—separate from the romance—that will resonate with queer people.”

And the School Library Journal agrees, noting that Crier’s War is “A lush #OwnVoices fantasy debut with science fiction elements and LGBTQIA+ representation.” (Sidenote: they also call it “perfect for fans of Sarah J. Maas’s Throne of Glass.” Didn’t I say this! Maas fans, I see you.)

But seriously, Crier’s War is already causing a stir, with Kirkus Reviews gushing that “Dizzying political machinations intertwine with a burgeoning romance. The plot zooms ahead with nail-biting tension. A fresh, suspenseful take on the robot apocalypse'” and Tara Sim, author of the Timekeeper Trilogy calling it “a beautiful poem of a book.” And if you know anything about Nina Varela, it really comes as no surprise that she should have written something so beautiful and revolutionary.

‘Game of Thrones’ Wins Big at the Emmys!

On Sunday night, the cast of Game of Thrones took their final bow. Actors and actresses who we’ve grown to love in their iconic roles throughout the series, such as Peter Dinklage, Emilia Clarke, Kit Harrington, Sophie Turner, Maisie Williams, and Gwendoline Christie assembled a final time on stage.

Despite coming off the heels of the (very) controversial final season, it was nevertheless a wonderful night to see this talented crew one last time. Game of Thrones was nominated in all of the major categories but surprisingly, only went home with two, although they were nevertheless very big ones. Let’s dive in and see what went down last night!

Unfortunately, most of Game of Thrones’s wonderful cast were not winners this evening. Despite being nominated for Lead Actor, Lead Actress and Supporting Actress, the fantasy epic series ended up losing all three of them. Fan favorites such as Maisie William’s Arya Stark, Sophie Turner’s Sansa Stark, and Gwendoline Christie’s Brienne of Tarth, to say nothing of Lena Headey’s Cersei Lannister and Emilia Clarke’s Daenerys Targaryen. Disappoint for all the work the ensemble put into the show, especially in terms of its outstanding female cast.

However, one actor who didn’t get left out was Peter Dinklage, who took home his fourth win for the series. He set the record with the most wins ever in his category (Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series), beating out Breaking Bad’s Aaron Paul. In his acceptance speech, Peter Dinklage said:

“I count myself so fortunate to be a member of a community that is all about tolerance and diversity, because nowhere else could I be standing on a stage like this. It’s been about 10 years, all said and done, from the moment I met David and Dan till now. I had no idea what I was getting myself into, but I knew that David and Dan were quite brilliant…We did nothing but sweat, we did nothing but laugh. Dave and Dan, we literally walked through fire and ice for you—literally—and I would do it all again in a heartbeat.”

He faced tough competition but emerged the only cast member with an award from the evening. Peter Dinklage’s win was pretty much guaranteed but he undoubtedly deserved it and his work as Tyrion Lannister will doubtlessly remain one of the iconic roles of television.

The show also lost out on Outstanding Directing and Outstanding Writing, but took home arguably the biggest prize of the night: Outstanding Drama Series. This also marked the show’s fourth win for the award and took home the final win for the night overall. The entire cast, plus writers D.B. Weiss and David Benioff, took the stage to thank the world for watching the series. It was a bittersweet end and we’re sure to now be feeling the effects of a post-Game of Thrones world.

But never fret! Two spinoffs are on the way and maybe, someday, George R.R. Martin will finish the Winds of Winter. Just because the show is over doesn’t mean the world of Westeros hasn’t come to an end.

9 of the Best Literary Halloween Costume Ideas for 2019

Halloween is approaching fast and the time is nigh for costume planning! It’s time for us nerds to shine. Let’s pull out all the stops and don the best for 2019!

To hell with the zombies, sexy nurses, and my GOD if I see one more Harley Quinn I’ll…(no disrespect for Harley though, gotta love her!) You understand though. Let’s be original people!

Here are the nine best Halloween costumes for 2019!

9. Nosferatu – Vic or Manx

There’s been a lot of people talking about the new show Nos4A2, a crime and horror tale that puts a spin on the Vampire genre. The show is based on the 2013 novel by Joe Hill, NOS4A2. It tells the thrilling story of Vic McQueen, a woman with supernatural abilities, who crosses paths with the evil and immortal Charlie Manx—a supernatural villain who feeds off the souls of children and then sends them to another realm. Vic strives to defeat Manx and rescue his victims.

Halloween is always a great time for Vampires and monsters, but now it doesn’t have to be a last minute excuse for a costume. Go all out and replicate your favorite character’s costume, or just throw on some fangs.

8. Pennywise

It wouldn’t be Halloween if there wasn’t something scary, but people’s sense of horror are so different nowadays. For some, a bloodthirsty, supernatural demonic being will bring on nightmares, but for others, a simple clown with a bad case of the flesh-eating munchies will scare them to death!

So pick your clown, grab some balloons, and be ready to show off those pearly whites!

7. The Joker

This Halloween may be the perfect time for clowns to make a comeback! Not only did we have the It: Chapter 2 released, but we have another film coming out that’s centered around a crazy clown. This October 4th, DC will be releasing the highly anticipated film Joker. Have him dancing, cracking jokes, or trying to take over Gotham City, the Joker is the perfect choice for Halloween!

6. Miles Morales

With the deal between Sony and Marvel being cut, fans of the MCU may have to say good-bye to the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. However, not all is lost for fans of both the comics and films—we still have the Spiderverse and, most importantly, Miles Morales! Everyone talks about the original webslinger, Peter Parker, or one of the others Spider-Men (or should I say people), Gwen Stacy, but Miles Morales needs a little more loving, making him a fantastic and original choice for a Halloween costume!

5. Game Of Thrones (Family Costume)

Bring the whole family together this Halloween by dressing up as your favorite family from Game of Thrones! Every family has their issues, and this Halloween you can enjoy the relief of realizing that your family is not as bad as most of these families…I hope.

Fantasy and gaming fans have a lot to look forward to this December with Netflix’s series The Witcher being released. Unleash your inner beast hunter by donning the armor of Geralt of Rivia. The origin of Halloween was to dress up to ward away evil spirits, with this costume ward away your fear of evil spirits, clowns, immortal beings prying on children, and just about anything else!

3. Riverdale

Riverdale is hot right now, and, no, I’m not talking about the steamy scenes. So if you’re addicted to the teenage, crime, mystery drama, and are thinking about going with a less horrifying costume, why not something from Riverdale? There’s a choice for everyone: the jock, the prep, the princess, the delinquent, and the serial killer too!

2. Edgar Allan Poe

Edgar Allan Poe had a huge impact on writing and on numerous writers. Til this day he still remains a huge part of our culture and this year especially brought some well deserved attention to the master of macabre. There was not only a Pop figure of him created, but also several YA authors reimagined his work, translating his tales into the modern age. All of this just goes to show that Poe is loved more than ever before, so don his likeness this Halloween and you’ll be the talk of midnight, forever-more!

1. Good Omens (couple costume, because we know they are OTP!)

Every Halloween party needs a good couple’s cosplay, but if you haven’t found the Crowley to your Aziraphale, your prayers could be answered this Halloween!

If none these costume ideas are book nerdy enough for you, you can always try your hand at creating an Em Dash costume.

Game of Thrones Creators Discuss THAT Coffee Cup Blunder

In the first interview since the HBO series ended, David Benioff and DB Weiss joked about some of the blunders in season eight.

David Benioff jokingly compared the infamous coffee cup blunder to a Persian rug:

In Persian rugs it’s tradition that you make a little mistake when making the rug, because only God can do anything perfect. That’s why I put the coffee cup there. It was a conscious, concerted statement of our imperfection.

Benioff admitted the mistake did embarrass them both:

We were concentrating so much on Daenerys and Jon Snow that we just didn’t see this coffee cup right in the middle. At first I couldn’t believe it and then it was embarrassment, because how did we not see this coffee cup in the middle of the shot?…Eventually it was just kind of funny. Because this one is just a mistake and it’s just kind of funny to us now.

Bernadette Caufield, one of the show’s executive producers, apologized when the episode initially aired. So it’s good to hear the show’s creators joke about it now.

Weiss touched on the fact that the show’s last season garnered so many Emmy nominations (32 in total!). He said he was honestly surprised, and he thought “(season seven) would have been the peak.”

Benioff also commented on Gwendoline Christie’s Emmy nomination:

Brienne of Tarth has always been one of our favourite characters and the moment where she is knighted by Jamie Lannister is just a wonderful thing in the story. To see Gwyn’s face in that moment – I’ve probably watched that scene 400 times and every time it gets me.
