Florence Steinberg, inspiration behind the character Fabulous Flo, was Marvel Comics editor Stan Lee’s secretary back when Marvel had a grand total of two staff members. Flo responded to fan mail, helped manage the small offices, and ran the Merry Marvel Marching Society, Marvel’s first fan club. During this time she saw the company transform into the iconic institution it is today.

After leaving Marvel, she went on to publish Big Apple Comix, one of the first American indie comics, however she later returned to Marvel as a proofreader in the ‘90s, and was still occasionally proofreading comics for the company until recent years.
Marvel paid tribute to Steinberg, saying:
“We are incredibly saddened to hear of Flo Steinberg’s passing and send our deepest condolences to her friends and family,” it read. “Flo has always been the heart of Marvel and a legend in her own right. She will be forever missed and always loved by all of us here at Marvel.”
RIP Florence, and our thoughts go out to her family and friends.
