In a not-so-shocking turn of events, HBO’s hit Game of Thrones and Hulu’s lauded The Handmaid’s Tale are leading the Emmy nominations with a cool twenty-two and twenty nominations, respectively.
Due to its timing, Game of Thrones was not eligible for the awards last year, leaving room for The Handmaid’s Tale to reign victorious, becoming the first show from a streaming platform to win best drama.
However, Game of Thrones is the favorite this year, and, as with all other years that it has been eligible, it is leading the nominations, beating out not only The Handmaid’s Tale but also SNL and Westworld, which each hold twenty-one nominations.
The New York Times speculates that though it is the favorite, The Handmaid’s Tale may feel have the upper hand due to ‘feeling increasingly relevant to many left leaning Emmy voters.’
