The Thief, acclaimed YA novel written by author Meghan Whalen Turner, has been optioned by Disney to make a live action adaptation.
Published in 1996, the fantasy is the first of the Queen’s Thief series, and follows a boy named Gen who, after being released from prison for stealing the King’s seal, a magus recruits him to steal a precious stone called Hamiathes’ Gift, which will allow the magus to claim the country of Eddis for his king. In exchange, he offers Gen worldwide renown, and threatens him with beheading if he attempts to escape.
Brian Duffield, who wrote such films as Underwater with Kristen Stewart and The Babysitter with Samara Weaving, is on board to write the adaptation, while Jim Whitaker, who produced such Disney properties as A Wrinkle in Time and Pete’s Dragon, is producing.
As of yet there’s no release date, but the film is set to premiere on Disney+. While this is only for the first book of the series, it’s safe to say that we’ll be seeing the rest of the six-part series soon enough. However, it’s also equally possible that Disney will attempt to pull a Dark Tower or Percy Jackson, and try to condense several books in only a single movie. All we can do is wait and see!
