Diagon Alley

This Dad Built Diagon Alley in His Driveway for His Daughters, Which Is Adorable

You might need to whip out your floo powder and head to Jon Chambers’ fireplace in Seattle because that is where Diagon Alley is. At least, that’s where Chambers built a Diagon Alley of his own. It’s in his driveway.

Formerly director of design and development at OpenCar, a traffic analytics company, Chambers returned to his artistic roots with this project. Speaking to Geek Wire, Chambers said, “I’ve always wanted to do something massive for Halloween or Christmas. I was born the day before Halloween, and October is like my power month. So I decided to quit my job and focus on this crazy thing.”

Chambers’ two daughters were born after the Potter books ended, but they’ve developed a firm attachment to Potter-lore. So much so that Chambers decided his big project after ditching his job would be rebuilding the magic marketplace of J. K. Rowling’s design. Through a mix of 3D printing, carpentry, and painting, Chambers is reconstructing the beautiful alley.

There may be about thirty storefronts in Rowling’s Diagon Alley, but Chambers’ counts in at a slim six. These include Eeylops Owl Emporium, Ollivander’s wand shop, Quality Quidditch Supplies, Magical Menagerie, Flourish & Blott’s bookshop, and Madam Malkin’s Robes for All Occasions.

If you’re in the area, feel free to check out Chambers’ construction. It’s for a good cause as well. After Chambers’ friend Matt Bencke passed away from pancreatic cancer, the family decided to use the exhibition as a way to raise money for pancreatic cancer research (you can donate here). It’s a tender, magical act true to the Wizard World.
