George R.R. Martin’s Novella Could Get the Television Treatment

Television has been pretty good to George R.R. Martin, but things could be getting even better. The author has confirmed that Cinemax has optioned the rights to his novella The Skin Trade, which first appeared in a 1989 collection called Dark Visions

Thanks to the success of Game of Thrones, an HBO adaptation of Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series, his old work holds plenty of appeal for TV producers. Apparently, that appeal extends even to the short, offbeat horror novella that he wrote 1980s. Martin confirmed on his “Not a Blog” Livejournal page that Cinemax has optioned the television rights to The Skin Trade.

Martin’s novella has been already been adapted into a series of graphic novels.

It’s important to note that a series is not yet a sure thing. Cinemax has ordered a script and will make a pilot. If the pilot does well, then we’ll get to see a full series.

Martin describes The Skin Trade as an “offbeat ‘werewolf noir’ novella.” It follows the story of a female private investigator and her sidekick, a werewolf. As you’d expect from Martin, it’s highly imaginative and highly entertaining. The Skin Trade won a World Fantasy Award for best novella in 1989.
