Kim Kardashian-West and Alice Marie Johnson

Inmate Freed With Kim Kardashian-West’s Help Scores Book Deal

We know Kim Kardashian as a social media superstar—famous for being famous, a self-renewing resource of celebrity. She’s a bit like a real-life Barbie; it’s just that instead of going to medical school, launching herself into outer space, and tending to wounded animals (Barbie must have a fortune in student debt), Kardashian-West is a socialite, reality TV star, artist, entrepreneur, and cultural icon. We’d call her a wearer of many hats, except there just aren’t that many hats that Kardashian-West would deign to wear. Her latest look—advocate and contributor to prison reform—has the power to enact real social change. In fact, it already has.

In 2018, Kardashian-West intervened in the case of Alice Marie Johnson, a sixty-two-year-old great-grandmother serving life in prison for a nonviolent drug offense. Johnson became involved in the drug world after her divorce and the chain-reaction of misfortunes that followed: gambling addiction; bankruptcy; unemployment; and, worst of all, her son’s untimely death. Though Johnson never handled drugs directly while working for a cocaine-trafficking ring, she did pass along coded messages to facilitate the transactions. When the police caught onto the operation, ten co-conspirators turned her in. As a result of their cooperation, each received reduced sentences ranging from no time at all to ten years’ imprisonment.

In 1997, Johnson was the only one sentenced to life. Since then, she’s expressed remorse for her involvement:

I felt like a failure… I went into a complete panic and out of desperation, I made one of the worst decisions of my life to make some quick money. I became involved in a drug conspiracy.

In an interview with Mic, Johnson describes the personal tragedies that have unfolded in her absence from the family home. Her mother, diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, has no caretaker. After her arrest, her only living son dropped out of school. He is currently imprisoned himself. “Unless things change,” Johnson pleaded, “I will never go home alive.”

Does that upset you? It upset Kim K: after reading the article, she contacted Johnson’s legal team. “[Kardashian-West] was not only moved to tears,” said lawyer Brittney Barnett, “but moved to action.” In a highly-publicized stunt, the reality TV star met with Donald Trump to discuss the possibility of commuting Johnson’s sentence. An ecstatic Johnson offered her gratitude for the intervention:

Ms Kardashian, you are quite literally helping to save my life and restore me to my family. I was drowning and you have thrown me a life jacket, and given me hope that this life jacket I’m serving may one day be taken off.

And she had plenty to be grateful for. On May 30, 2018—Johnson’s birthday—she was officially free.

This week, an imprint of HarperCollins has announced that there’s more to Johnson’s story. The book, After Life: My Journey from Incarceration to Freedom, will be available on May 21. Harper has deemed it an “honest, faith-driven memoir” taking a “deep look into the system of mass incarceration.” Kardashian-West will write the foreword. In an official statement, she shared what the story means to her and to the world:

Her story is a gift that will now reach so many millions more through her book and film. I hope Alice’s case is just the beginning of a movement to help those left behind. I am invested in continuing to support Alice and this cause.

Now that Johnson is free, she’s also free to tell her story. “I feel humbled that the telling of my story gives hope,” Johnson said, “and that my years of pain were not in vain.”

The Great American Read Invites Americans to Vote For Their #1 Book

PBS recently revealed a list of the most beloved books in America. But of the 100 titles listed, which is the fan favorite? PBS is hoping to find out.

PBS has launched a national reading event called The Great American Read in order to both encourage reading as well as celebrate successful literary works.

In addition to the reading portion, the event will feature an eight-part televised series that will depict documentary segments, interviews with celebrities, authors, and readers across the country. The first televised segment, which will last two-hours, will air on May 22 on PBS affiliate stations and will continue through the fall, commencing in October 2018.

According to PBS, The Great American Read, “Investigates how and why writers create their fictional worlds, how we as readers are affected by these stories, and what these 100 different books have to say about our diverse nation and our shared human experience.”

The massive list of beloved literary works reflect readers’ eclectic tastes with the inclusion of diverse titles. It includes classic favorites like F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby to J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter Series to E.L. James’ Fifty Shades of Grey (hey, we didn’t pick the list, folks).

Bookworms are encouraged to participate by reading the chosen books and they will also help to decide the number one book by voting for their choice online anytime between the premiere on May 22 until October 2018.

For additional information on how the top 100 books were chosen, program information, and more check out the link to PBS here.

Khloe Kardashian

Khloe Kardashian Deserves Better, So Here are 10 Goodreads Lists About Healthy Relationships

I’m going to start this off by saying that Khloe Kardashian does not deserve all the shit that’s been happening to her. Say what you want about the family, but Khloe has always been my favorite. She’s the HBIC. She’s the realest, most likable “character” on the show. Maybe it’s because she’s the black sheep; never really fitting in because she’s too big, too tall, maybe she’s OJ’s daughter, maybe she’s someone else’s daughter, maybe she’s not even a Kardashian! Khloe has to deal with a whole different ball game of bullshit in the media, and she’s better for it.

Seriously, convince me otherwise that Khloe has gotten the short end of the stick. She deserves to be happy, damn it.

After E! hits like Khloe and Kourtney Take Miami, or whatever else they put on TV, Khloe finally got her own show, Revenge Body, but when you realize how totally messed up the whole thing is, you really feel for her.

Khloe Kardashian’s family asked her to lose weight because they believed it was ruining their brand, the star has revealed.

So is Revenge Body revenge on who, your bitch-ass family for being assholes? I’ve never seen the show, so that’s what I’m choosing to believe.

Not only is she the whipping boy for her famous family, or so it seems, but her struggle in love is relatable if anything could ever be. Woman is hot as hell, entertaining, provocative, hilarious, and doing her best despite being “The Ugly Kardashian”, which I don’t agree with. Because none of them are ugly. It’s their job to be stunning.

Girl can’t get a break. She marries who she thinks is the man of her dreams, only to have that not work out, then a series of crap relationships (same, girl), before finally getting what she’s always wanted – a baby. The love the tallest Kardashian received when she announced her pregnancy was outstanding. I contributed to it. We were all rooting for you, girl. All of us. Because you deserve it.

But then this shit,

Are you kidding me with this shit? Can a girl not get a break?

So in support of Khloe, here are some user-created lists from Goodreads that do not condone those cheating bastards and biddies out there.

1. So you love a Bad Boy or Tortured Hero

Girl, join the club. There are so many sob stories out there for good (or at a minimum, decent) women falling for idiots who treat them like how you treat your iPhone after you’ve decided that you’re not going to replace that broken screen.

2. Low Angst Romance Books

This is one of my favorite list titles on this listicle of list titles, because it’s beautifully specific. Angst in romance novels might as well be oxygen, because the air is usually so tense you can cut it with a knife. I have enough angst in my life as it is, so I’m down for anything low-angst.

3. Honorable Heros-No Rakes & No Cheaters!

I’m not gunna lie, finding lists to fill out this article was difficult. Most of the romance novel lists on Goodreads have titles like Best Dirty Talker in Romance and Stalkerific Romance Novel Heroes. People really fetishize terrible relationships, and I don’t get it. There are enough crap relationships in real life, why is reading about disfunction so fantastic? Let’s give an all around honorable mention to honorable people.

4. Perfect books with NO CHEATING

“No cheating” hardly makes a book perfect, but hey, it’s a start.

5. New Adult – No Cheating Heroes

6. MF only Romance safe from triangles, cheating of any kind between hero and heroine emotional or physical.

No love triangles, no cheating, no emotional or physical abuse, so basically it’s a list of healthy relationships, which is apparently a huge minority in romance novels.

7. Jerk Whose Heart Only Beats For Her!

Isn’t that a trope we can all relate to. The asshole who’s an asshole to everyone except his girl. Reminds me of this meme, honestly.

8. No cheating Hero Romance Novels

Shout it from the rooftops, y’all. No cheating heroes!

9. INSTA-Love Romance- NO CHEATING

This one’s a little more niche, while there is, once again, NO CHEATING, these are tales about “instalove”, which is apparently what today’s youth is calling “love at first sight”.

10. Best Book Boyfriends

Fifty Shades of Grey is on this list, so take it with a grain of salt.
