An icon has passed away. Gloria Vanderbilt, according to CNN, has died at the age of ninety-five after a long battle with stomach cancer. The news was reported by her son, famous anchorman Anderson Cooper. Vanderbilt died at home, surrounded by friends and family. She had been in slowly declining health for the past few months. She was a famous socialite, fashion designer, and author, producing numerous well-known and celebrated fashion magazines. She licensed her name for numerous brands, including those that made scarves and designer jeans. Her lines were hugely successful, garnering her international fame, which was difficult for Vanderbilt due to her shyness in public. Later in her career, she branched out into art exhibitions, which included Dream Boxes and and thirty-five paintings at the Arts Center in Manchester.
She also wrote the memoir The Rainbow Comes and Goeswith her son, Anderson Cooper. The novel told about their relationship, offering an intimate glimpse into their lives, careers, and Cooper’s coming-of-age under his mother’s unconventional house rules. This book offers a portrait of two great people who dearly loved each other, making it all the more heart-wrenching to see Cooper announce his mother’s death: the memoir showcases just how strong their bond truly was behind closed doors.

Earlier this year in April, the New York Times published a cartoon that was considered anti semitic, which caused protestors to roar “Shame on you!” outside their Manhattan headquarters on Eighth Avenue. Now the newspaper has decided to stop running editorial cartoons altogether. The cartoon, however, had nothing to do with The Times’ in house cartoonists, but was drawn by Portuguese artist António Moreira Antunes. It was an illustration of Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu as a dog on a leash, with the Star of David around his neck, held by a blind President Donald Trump wearing sunglasses and a yarmulke.

The decision was disclosed when Patrick Chappatte, one of the cartoonists for The Times, published a blog post linking the paper’s recent decision in response to the controversy earlier this year. “We are in a world where moralistic mobs gather on social media and rise like a storm, falling upon newsrooms in an overwhelming blow” he said. “This requires immediate counter-measures by publishers, leaving no room for ponderation or meaningful discussions.”
However, James Bennett, the editorial page editor, said the edition of the newspaper that people see today in America does not consist of cartoons, and that this decision was being considered in advance. “We plan to continue investing in forms of opinion” he said. “Including visual journalism, that express nuance, complexity and strong voice from a diversity of viewpoints across all of our platforms”.
There was irritation about The Times’ decision to drop all editorial cartoons. According to CNN, Ann Telnaes, an editorial cartoonist for The Washington Post, contacted the paper to cancel her subscription, calling The Times “feeble” for cutting Chappatte.
According to CNN George R.R. Martin has broken his silence on The Winds of Winter. He’s revealed when the next book is coming! Rejoice, everyone! Or…not? As Martin, as usual, was very coy in his statement and revealed things while also not revealing anything at all.
George R.R. Martin confirmed that the next book ‘will be’ complete but refused to say when it can be expected, only that he promises he will finish it, along with A Dream of Spring. Will the ending will be different? He had this to say:
“How will it all end? I hear people asking. The same ending as the show? Different? Well… yes. And no. And yes. And no. And yes. And no. And yes.”
Thanks George, that clears that up. George continued in his statement by noting books are a wholly different medium than television and his novels will explore characters in detail that never appeared on the show, such as Jeyne Poole, Lady Stoneheart, Penny, Darkstar, Aegon VI, and more. But that’s all he goes into. In any case, it’s safe to assume his books will be quite different than the show’s ending but of course, all we can do is theorize until he finally, finally releases the next book.
It seems Game of Thronesmight be the latest to suffer as a result of the ongoing trade war. According to CNN, China’s video internet service which owns the rights to the show, shocked viewers when they delayed the release of the final episode due to “video transmission problems”. This was a huge blow to Chinese fans of the show, who vented their frustration and dismay over the episode’s sudden and unexpected delay online. Many fans suggested a possible connection between the ongoing trade war and the episode’s delay, and touting the possibility that streaming services were being targeted along with other products.
Several viewers responded to the delay by posting the infamous ‘shame’ GIF.

The timing is possibly parallel to the escalation of the trade war, with Donald Trump raising tariffs on Chinese goods, with China also raising its own tariffs on U.S. goods in turn. In addition, anti-US propaganda has escalated in China, leading to a lingering thread of hostility between the two countries. Chinese productions with US links, meanwhile, have been vanishing from various networks, getting cancellations without warning. Historical channels have also been airing propaganda films showcasing their countryman fending off American invaders. It’s possible Game of Thrones has become the latest victim of this due to intensifying relations.
What do you think of this situation? It’s a pity of all those Game of Thrones fans overseas who were deprived of the finale but it seems to be a symptom of a much larger problem.
