The novel tells the story of Sam, a troubled teen who finds solace in the world of skateboarding. He eventually falls in love with a girl named Alicia, who complicates his life even more. Tony Hawk makes a brief appearance in the novel as one of Sam’s idols, giving the protagonist advice when he is at his lowest points.
The show is set to also be produced by veteran theater actor/producer Adam Zotovich and producer Anita Greenspan, who is also the wife of the play’s composer and lyric writer Mark Mothersbaugh. This will be Mothersbaugh’s first theatrical production, having previous done the music for films such as The Lego Movie and Thor: Ragnarok as well as television shows like Rugrats. Kyle Jarrow, the Tony Award winning composer of The SpongeBob Musical, will write the script.
This is one of many Nick Hornby adaptations, as Fever Pitch, High Fidelity and About A Boy were all adapted into feature films. This is also the second time Slam has been adapted, as an Italian film adaptation was released on Netflix in 2017.
The Broadway production is set for a 2020-2021 run.

Because of Winn Dixie was a regularly discussed book in my youth. I remember reading the book and watching the film version with my class. We would eat alongside the characters as they ate meals that consisted of egg salad sandwiches, peanut butter stuffed crackers and chocolate chip cookies. These are moments in my childhood that I will never forget, and its part of the reason why I’m happy to hear that this Newbury-prize-winning novel will be adapted for the stage!
